Every dog is different and the guidelines regarding food amounts relate to their body size, age and level of activity. Typically mature dogs, or those around 1 year old, will eat 2.5% of their body weight in raw food every day. My starting point is therefore for the owner to weigh their dog.

If the dog weights 1kg they need 25g or if it weighs 10kg then it requires 250g every day. This provides a baseline but Active dogs and young Pups will however eat much more.

What's actually in dog food?

Typically it contains:

• 5 parts meat on the bone or mince
• 1 part organ meat such as liver, kidney or heart
• 1 part cooked veg which although its not essential it does keep everything 'regular'.

People are ever more looking for the 'healthy' option for their dogs.

Active dogs

As with people if you're constantly burning off energy you'll need to eat more. Given that your stomach size doesn't change much the diet needs to change and not just the amount.

With 5:1:1 as your starting point feed active dogs slightly more food and include slightly fattier ingredients such as duck and beef minces.

Inactive or Overweight dogs.

Together with eating less food it's the food calorie content that really needs to be reduced such as having leaner chicken and turkey minces.

Special Diets

If your dog has skin problems, allergies, dry skin, dry coat, fussy eater then Pets and More may have the solution.
