Fast Internet

Navan is being upgraded to have the seriously superfast internet capability named SIRO. In 2015 Navan was one of 10 locations named as launch towns for this joint venture by ESB and Vodafone.

The fibre optic cables are completely independent of the copper wire telephone network and are being installed alongside the ESB Electricity cables underground, overhead and bring 'light speed' internet directly to your home.

Local Upgrades

Installation of the main supply cables has already started and we've seen works in the estates of Athlumney Abbey, Athlumney Wood, Athlumney Hall, Bailis Downs and now Johnstown Wood.

At the time of publication we don't have a copy of their schedule or go live date but it appears that they're continuing throughout the area and Navan in coming months.

Lots of pavement is being dug up to install cables through every street to localised electricity junction boxes outside homes. When it becomes available those who sign up for the service will then need a new connection cable from the electricity box into their home.

Everywhere you see an electrical junction box the pavement will be dug up to connect a new fibre optic cable.

When will it go live?

The installation team have indicated that the service will be up and running this year. You can check online to see if your current internet service provider will be one of those offering SIRO. Details at the end of this article.

Need for Speed

Do we really need it?

Absolutely Yes!

If you ever experienced the 'dial up' internet in the 90's you will know what a huge leap forward Broadband provided and how many internet devices we now use at home daily.

Higher speed brings capabilities we now take for granted so who knows what we'll gain with the latest increase.

What do we have at the moment?

The phone line within a house or premises is connected to a nearby 'Network Terminal Unit' which in turn is connected to a local telephone exchange.

ADSL, known as Broadband Internet, is delivered by fibre optic cable to your local telephone exchange but slower speed copper telephone wires complete the journey to your home. The further you live from these fibre junction boxes the slower the internet connection due to the length of copper cable.

Think of it like having the fast motorway nearby but the slow speed local roads and traffic congestion slow down your journey. SIRO is the equivalent of having the Motorway lead directly to you home.

The existing telephone network junction box use copper wires which slow internet speed.

Will you take up the new service?

Will you notice the difference?

At the moment your contract with a service provider will give you a maximum connection speed and not a minimum and Eir recommend on their website that only 5 home devices at a time are connected at any one time. Plus copper wires don't handle internet traffic as good as fibre so we notice peak time congestion and slower speeds.

I checked my 100mb/s Vodafone connection at 7am one morning and it provided only 40m/s over Wifi and 65mb/s via a direct cable connection. SIRO promises closer to 100% all the time with no drop and is potentially 35% better than the speed check result at the time.

SIRO should enable more home devices to be watching High Definition online movies on several devices whilst someone else is playing HD games and another making HD video calls to multiple people ......etc

Your connection speed doesn't guarantee that the internet sites you visit will work any faster since performance is both 'upload and download'. Website providers need fast computer hardware and connection speed too.

If you use Wifi at home you still need to appreciate that it's just like phone reception where signal strength and supply speed isn't always great. Performance of the router could also be a limiting factor. We predict more people will connect devices requiring heavy internet use directly to the wifi router by cable for things like online TV etc.

What will it cost?

Higher speed internet certainly costs more and internet packages will be available through a number of service providers, all listed at the end. You can already check out their price offerings since the service is up and running in other locations.

An 18mth contract plan with Vodafone as one example with information published on their website suggests they will be offering €40 for the first 6mths for any new connection and then:

€55 for 150mb/s

€65 for 300mb/s

€90 for 1Gb/s.

Package deals, contract lengths and installation fees may apply together with any requirement to upgrade the Wifi Router.

If you want the highest 1Gb/s then you might need to justify the monthly fee but it is seriously fast if you have the Need for Speed.

What about Mobile Internet?

The advancement to 4G internet in recent years is due to make a similar huge leap to 5G perhaps within the next 18 months. Unlike mobile technology SIRO internet doesn't require you to replace your internet devices but 5G will mean a brand new mobile device is needed.

FEEDBACK from SIRO

SIRO is a joint venture of ESB and Vodafone which is investing €450 million in building Ireland’s first 100% Fibre-to-the-Building broadband network, offering a 1 GB (1,000 Mb) internet connection to 500,000 premises in fifty towns across Ireland.

SIRO technology is the first of its kind in Ireland. Using ESB’s existing infrastructure, overhead and underground, SIRO will deliver a 100% fibre-to-the-building network directly into homes and businesses right across Ireland. This technology, known as fibre to the home (FTTH), has no copper connections at any point to slow down the network and delivers 1 Gigabit download and upload speeds. For context, when downloading a high definition film (4 Gigabytes) with a 10 Mbps connection, the download time is an hour - with SIRO it takes approximately 30 seconds.

SIRO is offered on an open-access basis to all telecoms retailers in Ireland, so if anyone is interested in purchasing it they should contact broadband retailers like Vodafone or Digiweb. While SIRO is still at survey stage for its Navan rollout, we expect that services powered by SIRO will start to become available to households and businesses at the end of this year, but the full rollout will not be completed until mid-2019. Bailis Downs will most likely be one of the first locations in Navan that SIRO will be available in, but until the survey stage is completed this could be subject to change. Customers wishing to find out when SIRO is available to their home or business can sign up here and as soon as their building is connectable they will be informed by SIRO.

SIRO will revolutionise how consumers and businesses in Ireland experience broadband and will future-proof Ireland for innovative new services over the next thirty years. For example, households using online video streaming services like Netflix will soon need more powerful broadband connections in order to access ultra-high definition video. Similarly, students are using the internet more to work on projects through online video and collaboration tools. SIRO’s 100% fibre-to-the-building is the only ‘future-proofed’ solution in Ireland that has the capacity to cater for people’s broadband needs for decades ahead.
