December Issue- The HEE Newspaper

Letter from the Senior Editor

Whoo! This is a second issue of the HEE Newspaper! It's been a rough month, but we are still here, and I'm so thankful for that. Unfortunately you may see that our Newspaper is lacking some art, I was too busy with life to make new art for the newspaper, therefore I am looking to hire an artist :) Keep your eye on the forums for a contest, there may even be a prize ;)

In other news, Happy New Year everyone! 2020 promises to be a great year, so best of luck to you all in the coming year!

Q and A By Hallucination Manor

Q: Will my horse lose its brindle if I reroll it?

A: Nope! Your brindle is safe from the rerolling!

Q: Who are the mods and what do they do?

A: The mods are wonderful people who dedicate their time to make sure that everyone is following the rules, crediting art properly, and being good HEE citizens. Other than that, they’re just normal HEE players! Our mods consist of: Moonrose Mountains (164058), Sagamore farms (139172), Armistice Acres (72301), Corazon (63045), Stormsong Manor (32544), All Breeds (29276), Coldwater Meadows (28845), Kuewi KNN Stable (18024), and Abstract Dunes (12339)

Q: I’m a new player, what should I do to start my stable?

A: I recommend you start with getting a solid string of show geldings together and, if you can afford it, a premium upgrade (not necessary but, it’s helpful to have.) Then, (if you’re breeding for ratings) start gathering up some quality PEP+ combo mares. I would not recommend buying a stallion as most of the time they don’t match all of your mares and there are tons of (cheap) AB/LB stallions for stud every year!

Q: What is RO?

A: RO, or rollover, is on the first of every real life month, and it happens at approximately 2:30-2:35am GT. During this time all of your horses age up a year, mares and maxed out studs can breed again. The freshmen (3 year olds) and AB/LB mares (5-17) and stallions (3-17) shuffle about as new foals are born.

Q: What is RF?

A: RF is short for Random Factor, it is usually associated with capturing, breeding, and especially RO. RF is what decides if your WWWxWWW + sven match will give you a super strong WWW or a really crappy PPP.

Q: What is sven?

A: A sven is one of our many breeding items here on HEE, it gives a +2 boost to a foal’s traits and overall strengthens the foals ratings.

Column 002: Visualization

Getting inspired or motivated to create a work of art can be easy for some and a challenge for others. Being able to see your ideas on a completed work of art, before actually putting them together is a skill. One that requires practice along with the risk of the art not turning out the same way you planned it.

Say you’re given an idea for a commission. However detailed, I find these are generally the easiest to complete. You already know what stock to look for or what to create for your piece.

It can be more difficult if you’re given free reign over the commission. Personally, I will look for either a background, subject, or color scheme I’ve been craving to do or find a piece that I think will fit the subject.

Over time, you may have repeat clients and come to know what they like or dislike. One may prefer realism over fantasy, certain color schemes, overall themes, or certain traits they want the subject to have. Others may enjoy pure fantasy or outlandish themes. For me, commissions for repeat clients are the most fun and fulfilling. Not only am I able to be completely creative, but I am also able to incorporate a more personal touch to the art.

In the next column, visualization will be further explained with finding stock images and being able to provide credit to the stock providers.

If you have any special requests you would like to see included in The Art Corner, please contact me through Horse Eden (#28845).

Until next time,

Tips and Tricks by GreysAnatomy Stables

(*cough* thanks to Eve for creating the amazing yet also horrible capture button *cough*)

I know you’ve likely been told this a million times, but…

STOP

CAPTURING

I know. I know! It’s amazing and you never want to stop, but you must show some restraint.

Do you remember when you first logged on to HEE? Maybe it was long ago, or perhaps it was rather recently. Either way, I’m sure you remember how excited you were to get started. You wanted to go go go! Do everything you possibly could which most likely included capturing. Like many other stables, you might have only clicked the capture button once and immediately got dragged into the obsession. If you’re like me, the capture button quickly became addictive.

The desire to capture starts early on. We get into the game and almost immediately see a cheap way to buy horses. Back then, we weren’t aware of the fact that captures are purposefully a money sink. Now? After the obsession has already set in, we know that capturing rarely provides a good rating and just takes money. Yet, despite constantly being told that it’s not worth it, we keep on heading back to that glorious little button!

Let’s look at some captured horses in the horse search. This data won’t be 100% accurate for seeing capture statistics, but it can give us an idea of what is going on. This is what I recorded on December 24th, but keep in mind things change, so it might not be accurate come the release of this column. Anyway, let’s look at the number of two-year-old wild horses with “straight” ratings first. (There are so many wilds I have to try slimming down the list.)

WWW - 0

EEE - 50

PPP - 31

SSS - 133

AAA - 61

SubSubSub - 11

Now I’ll check single ratings. Keep in mind, this includes straight ratings. So I will also put a second number which is 50, 31, 133, 61, or 11 subtracted from the original count. Some SDs overlap, but I don’t want to go through each separate horse rating, so unfortunately I can’t separate overlapping SDs from the first count.

Dressage

W - 39

E - 311/ 261

P - 283 / 252

S - 500 (maxed out the horse search. Real number unknown)

A - 370 / 309

Sub - 106 / 95

Cross Country

W - 49

E - 366 / 316

P - 296 / 265

S - 500 (maxed out horse search. Real number unknown)

A - 330 / 269

Sub - 89 / 78

Jumping

W - 39

E - 313 / 263

P - 288 / 257

S - 500 (maxed out the horse search. Real number unknown)

A - 361 / 300

Sub - 102 / 91

As someone who prefers to keep just EEE+, along with the occasional PEE combo, these numbers scream. They are not weighing in favor of AD captures. Plus, these do not count any wilds that were FRed after capture! The horse search does not read deceased horses. So, the lower ratings likely have higher numbers than I can record.

Now, just out of curiosity, I’m going to check the breeding history of the first page. These horses will all be three year old EEE wild mares. The ratings I record will be what these mares have produced. Note: most of these mares have been sent to top LB studs.

That’s definitely not a desirable history. Paired to the studs these mares bred with, there should be a more consistent flow of EEE+ offspring. This shows that there is weakness in horses that go against the odds and get captured with a high rating.

Now, with this info in mind, let’s look at some information I’ve gathered from two lovely stables on the game.

From Carmack Elites.

Horses Captured - About 150 a year

Cost of Capturing - About 450,000 ebs

Best Rating Achieved This Year - PEP combos

Used maps when they had the chance.

From Moonglade Manor

Horses Captured - 41 this week

Cost of Capturing - 123,000 ebs

Best Rating Achieved - SEP and a 1of5

No maps used.

I asked Moonglade Manor if they would encourage others to capture or if they advise you stay clear of it. They said, “I would advise them to stay clear of it but I have an addiction so I can’t stop it myself, people should save themselves from capturing before it completely takes over.”

So, with this info, I think it’s safe to say that capturing is a no go. It’s very rare to get something good, and it’ll cost you a ton.

Interview by Tanglewood with Sunset Grove Farm

Q: How on earth do you do art?

A: Just a lot of practice! Enter contests and try different things.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration?

A: Rhiann on deviantart is a huge inspiration of mine.

Q: How do you change the color of a horse?

A: I greyscale the horse, add colour where I think is needed and use a clipping layer with white or black to change to a black or white horse. I also mainly use soft colors.

Q: Any tips for starting an art shop?

A: I’d recommend you start at a lowish price. When you begin to get better and the quality of your art increases, you can then increase the price along with it.

Q: How do you gain publicity for your art?

A: Honestly, I don’t really have a way of gaining publicity, I just dive straight into it.

Q: Any tips for aspiring young artists?

A: Don’t knock yourself down! It will never get you anywhere! For practice, my go-to is to do premades, or enter myself into contests.

Q: I’ve heard that you’re good at manes & tails. How do you make them so beautiful?

A: Honestly it just takes practice, I make the base shape, add highlights, use a smaller brush for more highlights. Then, I add shadows and any other details I think are needed.

Q: Who are your favourite stock providers?

A: If I had to pick, I would say Colourize-Stock or Chinga-Stock. However, I do use many others as well.

Q: What program do you use / recommend?

A: I use ibis paint X, I definitely recommend it if you don't have access to a laptop or computer.

Q: Anything else that you'd like to say?

A: Nope
