Ringworm is a very frequent fungal infection in dogs. It creates circular areas of hair loss or itchy, inflamed, flaky skin. However, ringworm is easy to cure, and it takes patience to do so. Medications, washing and excellent hygiene are the best approach to get rid of ringworm.
In the event of ringworm, the first thing you should do is go to a vet. There are numerous different diseases that could seem like ringworm and thus need to be identified by a vet before the therapy begins. After diagnosis, the vet may next suggest certain anti-fungal creams.
Medicated baths can also be helpful. Antifungal shampoos are used to treat the fungus. However, baths should be given as recommended by the vet, because baths done improperly or with the wrong type of shampoo can often make the skin worse.
And, last, the area surrounding the dog is cleansed. Ringworm can be spread by infected hair, bedding, floors, furniture, etc. Washing the dog’s bedding regularly and cleaning the locations where the dog spends time may lessen the chance of spreading the infection.
Sometimes topical treatment and baths won’t be enough. In such a circumstance a veterinarian could give an oral antifungal medicine which could be useful for therapy in case of extensive or chronic infections. Oral antifungal medicines should be given as indicated and the entire course of therapy should be finished even if the dog’s skin looks healthier.
A sensible remedy would also be to restrict interactions between the sick animal and other pets. Keep in mind, however, that ringworm can be passed from animal to animal and to people. Risks can be reduced by regular hand washing following contact with the animal, adequate cleaning and limiting interactions with the region.
It will also make it easier for cleaning to have the dog in a limited space. Some go so far as to use a pet containment device like the Halo Collar to keep their pets from wandering to places that are difficult to clean.
Elimination of ringworm usually takes time and perseverance. Medications will start to show improvements in the illness, but it will take weeks for it to recover fully. The ideal strategy to tackle the problem would be to follow the doctor’s treatment regimen and also maintain hygiene at all times.
