Steps

  1. Prepare for intubation.

  2. If using a laryngeal mask airway (LMA), ensure the cuff is completely deflated.

  3. Apply water-based lubricant to the backside of the supraglottic airway (SGA) device.

  4. Hold the SGA by placing your dominant index finger in the space between the tubing and the backside of the cuff.

  5. With the airway opening facing the tongue, insert the SGA by sliding the posterior (lubricated) surface along the palate and posterior pharynx until resistance is felt.

  6. Seat and position the SGA by advancing the tubing with your non-dominant hand.

  7. If using an LMA, inflate the cuff.

  8. Connect to bag-valve mask and begin ventilation.

  9. Confirm proper placement with end-tidal CO2 detection, auscultation, tube misting, and chest rise.

  10. Secure the tube.
