90002
90002
Intercity Swallow Class 90 90002 at London Euston.
The Class 90 was the last of the West Coast electric locomotives to be introduced prior to privatisation, intended to see the end of the original AL1 to AL5 electric locomotives of the early 1960s. Sectorisation saw the allocation of specific locomotives to each sector, only the first 21 locomotives of the class (90001 to 90021) were used on the Intercity sector alongside Class 86 and 87 locomotives on the West Coast Main Line, as well as limited use alongside Class 91s on the East Coast Main Line.
Class 90s have seen a variety of passenger services over the years since privatisation. As with the 87 fleet, the end of Class 90s on the West Coast Main Line the came in 2006, with the Class 90 fleet seeing continued use on the Great Eastern Main Line with ‘One’ Anglia, later Greater Anglia. EWS, later DB Cargo, Class 90s have also been used to support the Class 91 fleet on the East Coast Main Line all the way up until the introduction of the Azuma fleet, as well as the failed Grand Central route between London Euston and Blackpool North.
90002 is one of the lucky pair, alongside 90001, to remain in passenger service now with Locomotive Services Limited, with the remaining Greater Anglia locomotives now in use with Freightliner. 90002 regularly works charter trains now under their Intercity brand, having been returned to the original Intercity livery it wore when delivered.
