A group of 15 students, accompanied by 3 teachers, had the opportunity to travel to the island of Crete and visit the 1st Vocational School of Heraklion; the host students gave them a warm welcome. In-school activities and excursions on the coast were held. The purpose of the group mobility was to develop an underwater measuring instrument that the students were able to test in sea water. The instrument was implemented during the SE+A project from December 2022 to April 2023.
The students were welcomed at the 1st Vocational School of Heraklion with Cretan folk dances and typical foods. They also visited the Vocational Laboratories that are used by Greek students to attend job start-up activities. In the afternoon students visited the Technology Museum.
Excurtion to Xania and Rethemno town.
A history teacher from the school accompanied the Italian group around the center of Heraklion explaining the historical and architectural elements typical of the city and also offered a guided tour inside the Archaeological Museum, before visiting the Palace of Knossos
It was the most important and exciting day of the mobility! The trip started from Elounda, a small fishing village on the northern coast of the island after a short stop at Agios Georgios Monastery, built during the 2nd Byzantine era in Selinari gorge. Boat-trip to the small island of ‘Spinaloga’, this incredible place was once a leper colony and fortress. That time free access to the island was prohibited, so communication and business of the inhabitants with the rest of the world was executed in a very protective way. That is an example of protective and strictly isolated community. During the boat trip a first set of measurements were acquired and in the afternoon, back in Heraklion, more experimental measurements were made in the port.
The last day was really interesting, because the students had the possibility to visit the STEM Laboratory of the school and play with Science. Many experiments made for educational purposes and based on Arduino platform were shown to the students. It was really funny! The school usually participates in the Science on Stage competition.
