#4. Fun times with Mental Breakdowns - (BFDIA 5c)

Two quick disclaimers are needed for this article.

The first thing I would like to mention is that this is my third and final Golden Moment of theFunny55s. That's it, there will be no more moments that most people likely wouldn't have anticipated making it onto the show. In all honesty, this scene is rather infamous, and most don't see it as funny at all. However, I am not like most people. And while the common audience scorned this scene, I was rolling on the floor laughing. And that's why it placed so high on this countdown. Because no only am I trying to show you funny moments from the show, but I want to show the rest of you who say that BFDIA 5c is a bad episode to stop. This is one of the most criminally underrated moments in all of BFDI. And it's time that it receives some recognition.

The second thing I must mention about this article is that it has actually got a bit of history to it.

For those of you who aren't aware. There was a secret article on the funny55s, since nearly the very beginning. There was an article that was only accessible by a direct URL search. This was because during the writing of a specific article, I suddenly changed my mind, and decided to move it higher on the countdown. This cycle continued to repeat, and repeat, and repeat until finally it moved over forty spaces to where it is now. This is that article, there is no longer a hidden article in the countdown,

As a result of it, this article is acting as a time capsule for my writing style back when this article was (partially) written.

Everything under Leafy's dance is from the past

Not a lot of things can get to Pencil, perhaps Match can, perhaps Bubble can, but in the times where Pencil is so warn out from being trapped inside an evil being for a month, and having to drag her team out of it, she might just lose her character. We only ever got to see this side of Pencil once, and it was atop Evil Leafy. At first, everything seems fine, the alliance become sociopaths and leave the No Namers for dead inside Evil Leafy. Although, if Ice Cube can escape Evil Leafy, then anyone can.

In case anyone forgot, Ice Cube sucks at everything

And the No Name's are probably self destructing anyway. Their argument probably goes something like this.

Golf Ball: We need to get out of here right now!
Tennis Ball: I agree, if we quickly build a trebuchet, we might be able to escape through Evil Leafy!
Firey: What if we just burn through Evil Leafy?
Golf Ball: We can't do that, Evil Leafy is made out of concrete, look, its Lego Brick's underground factory!
Tennis Ball: Lets go inside!
Firey: I don't want to do that, lets do something else instead.
Gelatin: Wanna tie our legs together?
Firey: Sure!
Rocky: *Bulleh*
Tennis Ball: What if we climb Rocky's vomit to Evil Leafy's mouth?
Golf Ball: I don't agree to that.
Gelatin: Neither do I.
Firey: Same here.
Gelatin: Where's Fries?
Golf Ball: Outside since he didn't get pushed off!
Firey: Oh, that's sad, I don't want to carry on without him.
Golf Ball: We have to, in order to GET TO HIM!
Gelain: I am too sad to go on.
Golf Ball: Well I guess we can just sit here in silence until something happens!
Gelatin: *ties legs*

So then Freesmart finally gets to the top of Evil Leafy, Pencil is so tired, and so worn out she can barely function. Ruby then ends up killing Bubble, screwing Freesmart over, this too adds to Pencil's stress, and then Ruby asks a simple question.

"Do I press it?"

To 'it' I do not know which button Ruby is referring to, and to 'press' I do not like the tone.

For some reason, this was the last straw for Pencil, and in a mere matter of seconds, she loses all of her cool and explodes.

"Yes, of course, of course you dumb dumb, OF COURSE YOU PRESS IT"

Let's watch that frame by frame.

At first she seems normal, albeit a bit annoyed.

Then she seems to be really annoyed.

Now she looks angry.

And BOOM, Pencil is now about to tear Ruby to shreds.

I seriously love how Pencil makes this turn in a matter of seconds, you can see she is about to lose her mind. But what makes this great is watching her arms, her arms go from a patient and relaxed position to a crazy psychotic waving in a matter of seconds.

"R U B E Y!"

Pencil has a rare moment of complete loss of control, and how does she do this? By violently flapping her arms in the air! Pencil somehow forgot she was supposed to be a control freak, she forgot she was supposed to be a collected leader, she forgot she was supposed to be a master escapist and yet she somehow came to this. Making some impersonation of a party streamer.

Now how do you think Ruby reacted to that? Well of course in the most Ruby way possible, she curls up into a little ball and starts bawling like the little brat that she is.

Ruby lets out the softest little whimper.

Followed by the full waterworks.

Pencil, Book, and the rest of the gang aren't that happy about this. They just stand around awkwardly waiting for Ruby to finish crying.

Everything below Golf Ball daydreaming is new

Albeit, this wasn't much of a fossil. The thing I noticed right away was how rushed everything was. There was no incentive to produce any side jokes, or any points of interest. Anyway, I think it's time the article continues the modern style.

Where were we?

Right...

This is the part of the story where things get really...

Awkward

There's always certain moments where I appreciate the editors, because instead of making this crying scene short.

They linger on this scene for way longer than it should

"At first, you're feeling sad, like aww, she's crying, that's so sad"

"And then she kept crying..."

"And crying!"

"Are you talking about me?"

Clearly Book was not a fan, neither were the other three.

Pencil is regretting what she just said

Match and Book look at each other with an "oh no, this is happening"

They also look like they've seen this happen at least a hundred times before

Pencil is wondering why she brought Ruby onto the team in the first place

Meanwhile Ice Cube is gleefully enjoying the show

Can't read a room because she can't read

These pictures really can't do the scene justice, the pregnant pauses that the actual scenes have make this moment so much more hilarious and engaging than I could ever imagine. The amount of time the rest of the team spends standing around and watching Ruby have a mental breakdown will always make me laugh.

So now it's all up to Pencil to fix the problem.

"uhhhh"

Surprisingly she is successful.

"I'm sorry, Ruby"

"Your feelings are invalid because I am getting cabin fever"

"I'm sorry you're so weak"

This is based on a real conversation I overheard.

Ruby manages to recover, and she presses the button.

Aparrently the wrong one

Because it results in Match and Ice Cube being blown up

Book remains unfazed by the occurrence

Pencil isn't

"R U B E Y"

"I'm going to kill you!"

"Red button! Not the Green Button!"

"Don't they teach you this in Gemschool?™"

*Weird disembodied collective gasp*

Pencil seems like she would be the worst stand-up comedian.

Now back to the episode.

(While whimpering) "I didn't go to Gemschool™!"

"Hey, Book. Is it okay if we burn Ruby?"

"Pencil!"

"Gemschool™ is only for diamonds!"

"Okay, Ruby. Just press the button already"

Shortly afterward, Ruby is then told to press the yellow button.

A yellow button appears out of nowhere

and the rest of Freesmart is now imprisoned

"R U B E Y"

"RED BUTTON!"

"NOT THE YELLOW BUTTON!"

"NOT THE GREEN BUTTON!"

"THE! RED! BUTTON!"

Ruby pleads for her life

This game is about to break her

I'd also be letting you down as the creator of the Funny55s without mentioning that this.

Looks like this.

Now you'll never be unable to unsee that.

So finally, Ruby obeys Pencil

Holy cow. It's a laser!

It hits Pencil, yet Book barely misses being hit.

Book doesn't react to the leader of the group being incinerated.

Oh, now she reacts.

One tiny fried Pencil.

"Whatever, Pencil wasn't much of a leader anyway."

Now, since Pencil has been burned to a crisp, it's down to Book and Ruby.

"Oh poop! I sure hope it doesn't get me next"

"Uhh"

"How about the purple button?"

The moment of faith

Success!

Where are these lasers coming from?

And so that concludes arguably one of the most controversial scenes in all of BFDI.

And as always, this is a very competitive category

And poor Book is still stuck with whiny Ruby for the rest of the episode. I'm sure she absolutley adored that.

Later in the episode

Book knows exactly the type of stuff she's about to endure

P.S. If someone were to ask me what Pencil's spasm was supposed to be, I would probably say it looks like a drowning chicken. complete with the flapping and the squawking to complete perfection. But there really is no way to describe it, you will not understand what is happening unless you go see the episode for yourself.

P.P.S. The Original title for this article was called "Pencil's Double Spaz" Another name that came very close to being the title of this article was "Pencil goes Apeshit (too)" Unfortunately both these names were scrapped in favour of the current name we have right now.

P.P.P.S. Despite how much I showed my love and affection for this sequence. It actually took me a very long time for me to come around on it. For a while I was like the rest of the audience, I hated the negativity, I hated the awkward, I hated the brutalness of it all. But over time I slowly began to enjoy it a lot more. Enough that I decided to land it a low spot on the Funny55s. Then as I wrote the article, I decided to bump it a bit, and slowly but surely, this was the go-to article to bump down and down the countdown until it reached a phenomenal fourth place on the entire thing.

P.P.P.P.S. As I'm reviewing the episode, I have to give special kudos to the animation. This episode was very visually stunning on a rewatch. The darker colours and the extra detail add a extra level of atmosphere that some episodes had been lacking.

In my opinion, while this scene in BFDIA 5c is unremarkable on its own, Pencil's death in this scene was remarkable for just how quick and brutal that laser shot is. She deserved it for being a big asshole to Ruby. Goddamn I love laser-guided karma, literally.
