I am a molecular biologist working on questions in microbiology, ecology, and evolution. I focus on using cutting edge molecular tools to address a wide range of questions ranging from microbial genetics to metagenomics. Some recent projects:
Developing faster methods for testing and sequencing SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19
Using next generation sequencing to identify essential genes in the bacterial pathogen Shigella flexneri
Using laboratory evolution to investigate genetic and epigenetic changes underlying antibiotic resistance
I dabble in a number of other projects that include using DNA sequencing to investigate animal diets, soil metagenomics, and bacteriophage discovery
Additionally, I do consulting work for Fonterra (metagenomic sequencing of membrane bioreactors) and a New Zealand based start up company developing portable qPCR devices.
Kelly is pursuing her PhD. She is interested in the evolution of antibiotic resistance in both lab and environmental isolates of E. coli.
William has recently finished his MSc in our lab. He is investigating isopod population genetics and isopod mitochondrial DNA structure. He has previously used metagenomic sequencing to determine animal diets and simulations to determine the best sequencing method to use for metagenomic analyses. He has just started his PhD at the University of Otago in June of 2020!
Alyssa is pursuing her MSc, in collaboration with Livestock Improvement Corporation. She is investigating how microbial communities can affect bovine welfare using metagenomics. She recently won a the Cathering Baxter postgraduate scholarship for her work.
Marsha is a summer student in the lab, who is the recipient of the Massey School of Natural and Computational Summer Research Scholarship 2020. She will be in the lab from Nov 2020 to Feb 2021.
Brooke is a summer student in the lab, who is the recipient of the Massey School of Natural and Computational Summer Research Scholarship 2019. She will be in the lab from Nov2019 to Feb 2020.
We've had a number of past undergraduates, visiting students, etc in the lab:
Andrew Graham (Research in Biosciences student, studying abroad from the University of Edinburgh)
We have strong collaborations with a number of labs, including Olin's Silander's group at Massey, with whom we share lab space with and have shared weekly lab meetings.
Want to join the lab? Excellent! If you are interested in working with us, please send your CV to n.freed@massey.ac.nz along with your motivation to work with us and your particular project interests.
