What is CAPS?
The Curriculum and Assessment policy statement (CAPS) is the curriculum document approved by the department of basic education (DBE) in south Africa. It is implemented in South African schools for each approved school subject from Grades R – 12 .
Similarly, DBE (2021), defines CAPS as is a single, comprehensive and concise policy document that has replaced the former documents such as the Subject and Learning Area Statements, Learning Programme Guidelines, and Subject Assessment Guidelines for all the subjects listed in the National Curriculum Statement Grades R – 12.
CAPS serves as a revision of the previous National Curriculum Statement , and with the introduction of CAPS, every subject in each grade has a single, comprehensive and concise policy document that provides details on what teachers need to teach and assess on a grade by grade and subject by subject basis (Mopeli, (2017).The policy statement provides a set of key aspects of classroom planning—such as objectives, content, teaching methods, and assessments—empowering educators to implement activities effectively and systematically.
