Computer Reliability

Every human who lives on Axiom is entirely reliant on computers, both robots and the screens that are in front of their faces. In WALL-E, the robots are all the humans aboard the Axiom know, from their cleaning to being able to get around being controlled by computers. For example, their survival and the cleaning of Earth is reliant on robots like WALL-E, who we can see have broken down. However, the reliability of these computers fail the second that AUTO, the robot captain that pilots the ship, turns evil. AUTO was programmed under the orders to "do not return to Earth", therefore AUTO takes this as a sign to get rid of any reason to return to Earth. Specifically, when GO-4 grabs the sprout that the Captain was holding in order to get rid of it on AUTO's orders rather than the Captain's. All of Axiom can be seen as an embedded system, a computer used as a component of a larger system, and since AUTO controls the ship, all these computers are bound to fail when the "software component" fails. It seems that to improve the reliability of the computers onboard the Axiom, the robots regularly go through checkups, as instructed by AUTO, but when the AUTO goes haywire and attempts to take control of the ship, the robots who were previously thought to be defective. The system of the Axiom is extremely liable to fail, as "a system with 200 such parts is practically unable to work, as it has reliability lower than approximately 2% and probability of failure 98%" [1], which could explain why the system on the Axiom failed them, which potentially could have resulted in the casualties of many if not for the rogue robots.
