[ Chapter 7

Computer and Network Security

Hacking

o   A Hacker is someone who is skilled at improving and exploring complex technological systems, and more recently someone who is able to gain access to networks and computer’s they shouldn’t have access to. This section covers all the ways one could gain access like guessing passwords through brute-force and such, but this doesn’t relate much to Wall-e. The only time considered un-authorized access was done when the Captain lost control of the ship to AUTO, and manually managed to switch the robot off. However, what’s left of humanity barely have the capacity to take care of themselves without robots, so clearly hacking the ship would be unlikely and additionally they all have no reason to really do so as they live life leisurely.

Cyber Crime and Cyber Attacks

o This section focuses on the negatives of universal access to the internet, and how bad actors and malicious individuals and groups can lead organized crime with how heavily consumerism takes place online. While this doesn’t heavily tie to Wall-e, the technology within the Axiom seems to be all connected to each other, so if someone had the intent within the ship cyber crime seems possible, but unlikely given the state of the passengers.

   Online Voting

o   This section talks about how the process of voting with the internet would work, and considers the pros and cons. Since most people have access, especially in North America, more people would vote due to convenience, and ballots could be more efficiently counted at a lower cost. However, the risk could also be costly since this is a government level election we’re talking about and the risk of hackers and other unfairness as well as privacy issues. In Wall-e, almost everything is decided for the humans that live among the Axiom, from the clothes they wear, to the food they eat – they seem to have little say about things but also don’t seem to bother with choosing for themselves and allow the ship to guide them instead. There is a scene in the movie where the ship advertises that blue is the new red, and immediately everyone chooses to change to blue. It seems that there is a collective mob mentality, and that voting would not survive as a concept since everyone seems to think very similarly, until the end where everyone is shaken from their reliance of technology.
