It is with great pleasure that even during difficult times, I had the opportunity to reach out to all of the students included in Elmont’s Top 25 class rankings and hear all about their outstanding achievements. These students are such role models and they’ve put in 100% hard work throughout high school and it shows. They’ve done a countless amount of activities around Elmont to help contribute to the great school it is today. In this final edition of Elmont Phoenix newspaper for the 2019-2020 school year, as we say farewell, we’re going to shine a light on Elmont’s Top 25 students...
Does the name not sound familiar? Jahnia is the Valedictorian of Elmont’s Class of 2020. She is brilliant, ambitious, and independent. Jahnia will be attending Binghamton University in the Fall, as she will be a member of a first year research program at Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science - impressive! Throughout her time at Elmont, she’s participated in the Black History Month performance, the Marching Band, Color Guard, Key Club, Mathletes, and the Newspaper Club. She’s also a member of the National Senior Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta. Jahnia is resilient and she wants to continue to put her best efforts forward to overcome any challenges that may come her way. Jahnia acknowledges Ms. Harley and Ms. Taylor for their continuous support. She appreciates her parents for always pushing her to work hard and to go beyond expectations. As Jahnia says farewell to Elmont, she’ll always hold dear to her all the performances and productions that she's indulged herself in at Elmont. “It has been such a privilege to not only watch so many brilliant shows as an audience member, but to also play a huge role in their productions as a student director and stage manager for the musical, drama, and Black History Month program,” Jahnia stated.
I know this name sounds familiar too. Marvia is the Salutatorian of Elmont’s Class of 2020. Throughout her time at Elmont, she’s participated in Leading Ladies, Key Club, Jazz Band, Jazz Choir, Chamber Orchestra, Senior High Musical, Black History Month Production, Science Research, Varsity Volleyball, Superintendent’s Advisory Council, and is a part of numerous honor societies including Tri-M Music Honor Society (Historian), National Senior Honor Society (Secretary), Rho Kappa Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, Science National Honor Society (President), and World Language Honor Society (Grade Ambassador). Marvia is a warm-hearted human being who has such a positive outlook on life. She appreciates so many people that have supported her time and time again. Including her family for always being there for everything, the team of teachers from her Science Research program (Ms. Flannory, Mr. Spinnato, Ms. Farley, Ms. LoPuzzo, and Ms. Taylor) who’ve helped her grow into the scientist she is today, her friends Kyana, Rafiyat, and Munahil, and her guidance counselor, Ms. Diaz, who has always had her back. As Marvia says farewell to Elmont, she recalls that she’ll miss the Elmont school spirit the most: “Being a Spartan has been so exciting and I’m so proud of all the achievements we’ve made as a school. From the crazy basketball games, to the senior hallway promposals, I’ve had the best time seeing the success of my classmates and just enjoying our time together. I’m going to miss having my best friends around everyday.”
Antonio Gutierrez: the intelligent and sharp-witted yet musically-inclined student. Being a student at Elmont has taught Antonio about the importance of time management and how to interact with his peers effectively. Antonio is very thankful for the motivation and guidance that his parents provided for him as they continually pushed him to strive for the best. As Antonio says farewell to Elmont, he also shows his appreciation to Elmont saying: “I will also forever appreciate the abundance of support from parents and administration for me and other students.”

Sky appreciates her family for always being there for her throughout high school and her friends for giving her an amazing and extravagant life outside of just high school. Sky is always thankful for Mr. Veneroni and Mr. Keeshan as their classes always lightened her mood and served as an escape from the stress that she endured. As Sky takes her gracious exit from Elmont, she’ll miss the events that created a lot of great memories for her. Sky recalls that “the school events were also a great way to forget about any troubles and just let loose and have fun, which is something I’ll cherish forever.”
Xavier Quiroz, a mathematical genius. Xavier is attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to pursue a bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering. Throughout Elmont, Xavier was involved in Mathletes, Key Club, Science National Honor Society, National Senior Honor Society, and World Language Honor Society. Elmont has taught Xavier that life can throw a whole lot on your plate all at once with such a short amount of time, even though we can’t control that we can still attempt to eat every last morsel. Xavier is grateful to have had Mr. Ferraro as a teacher: “He manages to find a great balance between entertaining his class and making sure that everyone understands the material and I appreciate it so much!” Xavier further mentioned that the Mathletes has felt like home and he’ll miss it a lot: “I will miss Mathletes the most because I felt the most at home there and continuing to challenge my knowledge of math was so fun to me.” Xavier is also going to miss the great people that he’s gotten to know here at Elmont and hopes that they’ll have continuous happiness in the future.

Vanessa is grateful for Mr. Nuara for being an outgoing yet effective history teacher and Ms. Farley for always believing in and motivating Vanessa. As Vanessa says goodbye to Elmont, she holds dear with her, the experience as Co- Captain of the Badminton team: “The positive spirit of my team was one I truly valued, and I looked forward to playing every year. Kyana shows her gratitude to individuals like Ms. Hudley-Simmons, for showing her the importance of wholeheartedly supporting one another. Also, Mr. Squillace, Ms. LoPuzzo, Ms. Harley, Ms. Mojocoa, and Mrs. Marte for sharing lessons of virtue and humility. She’s also thankful for Ms. Mojocoa, Ms. Whyte, Mr. Marini, Ms. Martinez, and Ms. Justin for their help with letters of recommendations, job references, and overall helping her to get the place she is today. Robyn is thankful for Ms. Justin and Ms. Whyte for always pushing her to aim higher, her family for making sure Robyn had what she essentially needed so she could succeed in what she wanted to, and her best friend Karmie for investing in their beautiful friendship. As Robyn goes on to the next chapter of her life, she’ll always carry the wonderful memories she made here at Elmont. Morgan also appreciates Ms. Harley, Ms. Lucey, Ms. Gilliam, Ms. Cervoni, Mr. Nuara, Mr. Squillace, Mr. Dougherty, and Mr. Burke for being a part of her amazing journey at Elmont. Nneka has learned there’s a big beautiful world out here and that she shouldn’t hesitate to explore it: “I refuse to limit myself to only one part of the globe. The next chapter for me isn’t just college. It’s what I can do with myself as a young intellectually curious adult.” Nneka appreciates her twin brother, Olisa, and her older brother, Buchi. She also appreciates her friendship group for making high school an amazing experience. As Nneka moves forward to the next chapter of her life, she recalls that she’ll miss Model UN the most. “It has truly shaped me into the outspoken problem solver that I am today. It is during trying times like this that makes me realize the importance of cooperation and consensus.”
Christian Saby, always a Spartan at heart. Christian will be attending Stony Brook University. He is currently undecided on his major, but he’s leaning towards the STEM field. Throughout Elmont, Christian has participated in Soccer, National Junior Honor Society and National Senior Honor Society. From his experience at Elmont, Christian has learned to value and love yourself for who you are. “If you’re different that’s fine because those who you can call friends will value you for WHO you are and not WHAT you are,” Christian said in a very inspirational way. Christian is very appreciative of his JV Coach for making him enjoy soccer so much and for being understanding of the teams’ strengths and weaknesses. As Christian says so long to Elmont, he discussed how much he’ll miss a special someone: Ms. Taylor. He has such a beautiful relationship with Ms. Taylor, he loves her caring personality that always made him look forward to her class.

Throughout Elmont, Ogden participated in Tri-M Music Honor Society, Rho Kappa Honor Society, World Language Honor Society, Science National Honor Society (Treasurer), Men of Elmont, Key Club, Superintendent’s Council, FBLA, Jazz Band, Jazz Choir, (Section Leader), Marching Band, and the Musical. Ogden’s experience at Elmont has taught him that he wouldn’t be where he is today without his amazing support team. Also, you must embrace your culture and take advantage of opportunities. “There’s always something out there, it’s all about if you are willing to seek it for yourself,” says Ogden. Ogden is truly grateful to so many people including his mother Carole for being his number 1 supporter. Unfortunately, though she is no longer with us, Carole still is and will always be Ogden’s inspiration. Furthermore, Ogden appreciates his brother James for always being there for him, his friendship circle for always brightening his days, and Mr. Dougherty for his supportive and caring ways and his commitment to Elmont. As Ogden moves on from Elmont, he shares that he’ll miss doing the musicals a whole lot. “The extracurricular I’ll probably miss the most is the musical, as I’ve met so many amazing people through it and being able to play Piragua Guy was one of the most rewarding and entertaining things I’ve done to date which truly is once in,” he shared. If you saw the Musical this year, you would know the crowd LOVED the Piragua Guy.
Devyon Mcdonnough, a highly determined scholar. Devyon will be attending the University of Chicago to double major in Cancer Biology. Throughout Elmont, Devyon was a member of the National Senior Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Key Club, World Language Honor Society, Rho Kappa, Business Honor Society, and National Junior Honor Society. Devyon’s experience at Elmont has taught him certain levels of maturity as he grew up there. “The school has taught me how to be a respectable and professional individual overall while maintaining a positive ideology towards education,” he tells. Devyon is grateful for his grandparents for playing an avid role in caring about his education: “They were always there for me in my education whether it was from parent teacher conferences to my award ceremonies, they always had my back through thick and thin. Without their help I wouldn’t have grown to be the strong independent black male who understands the power of an education.” As Devyon moves forwards to the next chapter of his life, he’ll always hold dear to him the memories he made working with the World Language Honor Society. “The journey of being in this culturally distinct group led me to take up the position of being Class Ambassador, which enabled me to speak towards what I saw in the future of the upcoming generation of students. But the number one reason why I will miss the World Language Honor Society is because of Mr. Veneroni and Ms. Del Rosario. These two were always there for the club through any and all unpredictable circumstances.”

Throughout Elmont, Tore has participated in Model UN, Leading Ladies (Ambassador), Rho Kappa Honor Society, Science Honor Society, National Senior Honor Society, Peer Educators, Key Club, District Marching Band, and Varsity Softball, and Yearbook. Elmont has taught Tore to stay true to herself no matter what everyone is doing with themselves. Tore has taken advantage of opportunities that Elmont has granted to learn in an advanced setting with access to many resources. First and foremost, Tore shows her gratitude to God for his everlasting provision and opportunities he has presented to her. Tore shows gratitude to her mother for being her biggest supporter throughout her academic journey and her unconditional love. She further appreciates teachers like Ms. Gilliam, Ms. LoPuzzo, Ms. Taylor, Mr. Persaud and the advisors of Leading Ladies, Ms. Brown, Ms. Butler, and Ms. Cox, for teaching her about the significance of self-love and women empowerment in the Black community. As Tore moves forward, she’ll miss the great environment Elmont has given to her: “I’m going to miss the loving and safe community that Elmont has. I most definitely felt a sense of innocence in the high school atmosphere that dissolves in the ‘real world.’”

Throughout Elmont, Rafiyat has participated in Science Research, Jazz Choir, World Language Honor Society, Varsity Basketball (Manager), Chamber Orchestra, District Orchestra Ensemble, Peer Educators, Leading Ladies (Ambassador), Key Club, Class of 2020 (Secretary), Tri-M Music Honor Society (Secretary), Science National Honor Society, National Senior Honor Society, and Senior High Orchestra Ensemble (Vice President). Rafiyat’s experience at Elmont has taught her that hard work and diligence pays off in the end and they have molded her into the person she is today. Rafiyat knows that she can achieve anything she sets her mind too if she keeps her determination. Rafiyat appreciates her family for being her motivation, as they are the reason why she is always so determined because she strives to make them proud. As Rafiyat continues onto the next phase of her life, says she’s so appreciative for everyone at Elmont and she’ll forever be a Spartan at heart: “I am truly grateful for all the love and support from everyone in Elmont Memorial High School and this is why I will always be Spartan.”
Kyla Cohen is a unique and creative scholar at Elmont. In the Fall, Kyla will be attending the Stevens Institute of Technology to study Visual Arts and Technology. During her time at Elmont, Kyla participated in the following extracurricular activities: National Art Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society, National Senior Honor Society, and World Language Honor Society. She will most miss the latter; as part of her work in the World Language Honor Society, Kyla played a key role at the World Language Festival for the past two years that it ran: she was an amazing and artistic face painter. Ms. Martinez ran a booth at the annual World Language Festival two years in a row to raise some money and Kyla Cohen was hands down the number one face painter of cultural flags and other designs. Ms. Martinez really relied on her those last two years and appreciates Kyla's volunteerism and skill. Elmont has taught Kyla to stay true to herself and continuing to be determined and work hard - motivations driven also by her mother whom she is very grateful for. As for what she'll miss the most about Elmont, that happens to be Ms. Del Rosario and Mr. Veneroni of the World Language club, as they have always been there for Kyla and truly cared for her.
Imani Favard, a wise young lady and a teller of truths. Imani will be heading to the New York Institute of Technology in September, with Life Science B.S./ Physical Therapy D.P.T double major. While at Elmont, Imani participated in tons of clubs and activities, including: President of Rho Kappa, Secretary of Science Honor Society, Editor of the Elmont Phoenix, Vice-President of Yearbook, Key Club, Senior National Society and National Music Honor Society. Ms. Martinez feels really special that Imani will miss her two clubs the most, Yearbook and Newspaper Club: “Yearbook Club allowed me to be creative and relax after a long day of school. Newspaper Club allowed me to think about things beyond the classroom and look into things that interest me.” Elmont has taught Imani much… don’t make excuses, meet shortcomings head on, resilience, the importance of a sense of community and support system, to name a few. Imani has a lot of people she wants to thank for support during her high school career: “I want to first thank God for getting through these six years in one piece. Next I want to thank my parents for always encouraging me and helping me to succeed. One teacher I would like to thank is Ms. Flannory. She encouraged me and helped me to see my potential beyond research. She helped me to see that even when things don’t go as planned it doesn’t mean that I’ve failed and my worth is more than what a test can measure or what a piece of paper says I’ve accomplished. Another teacher who I will never forget is Ms. Harley. She was the first black teacher I’ve ever had. She was the first teacher who truly held me to such high standards and demanded the best at all times. She always had group discussions and wanted us to think and learn about the real issues in the world.” This Elmont family and what she’s described as “my home” is what Imani will be missing most of all next year - even the crowded hallways and loud cafeterias.
Angela Melendez, the researcher and number one recycler. Angela will be attending Hunter College in the Fall, and of course she will be staying science-oriented with Physics as a major. During her time at Elmont, Angela was the president of Mathletes, Vice President of Science National Honor Society, founder of the Recycling committee, member of Science Research, Key Club, Business Honor Society, Newspaper Club, Yearbook, Jazz Choir and World Language Honor Society. She’ll miss her extraordinary recycling team for sure, the Jazz choir, and the Science Research room because she felt herself the most there. As for lessons learned at Elmont, Angela puts it bluntly: “Superficial stuff doesn’t mean anything; it won’t get me anywhere. Choose who you spend your time with wisely, work your butt off times and finally don’t do drugs, kids.” When asked about shout outs, Angela had a lot: “Shout out to Mrs. Flannory, Mr. Raskind and Mrs. Farley! What’s uppppppp. Also, all the teachers who I had a chance to connect with motivated me even further. I consider myself lucky to have had such a gem group of teachers like Harley, Davison, Mojocoa, Raskind, Martinez, Flannory, Farley, Gilliam, Gibson, Persaud, LoPuzzo and Miele. Much like her classmates have already said, the atmosphere of Elmont is what Angela will miss most: “I’ll miss how tight Elmont was because it felt like a second home.”
Abimbola Omotade, the sweetest and most friendly scholar. Abimbola will be heading to the University at Albany in the Fall to study Human Biology (major) and Creative Writing (minor) with the hopes of later attending medical school and becoming a pediatrician. While at Elmont, Abi participated in the following clubs and activities: Leading Ladies (Treasurer, Junior Ambassador, Co-President), Newspaper Club, Peer Educators, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), National Junior Honor Society, National Senior Honor Society, World Language Honor Society, Rho Kappa Honor Society, Step Team, Gospel Choir, and Yearbook. Abi will most miss the Leading Ladies because she “took on a new leadership role every year, and this was the most involved [she’s] been in a club during my high school career” and is forever grateful for the lessons she learned there. Abi’s experience at Elmont has also taught her to take nothing for granted: “There was even a time where I took myself for granted by underestimating myself and my own capabilities. Once I moved past that, I soared, and not only in my academics but in my morale as well.” She would like to give special shoutouts to God, her family and her friends, and her 6th grade teacher, Mr. Matthew Verdi, who always believed in her and knew she was destined for great things. Leaving Elmont behind, Abi will most miss “the sense of community it provided me and others alike… We all felt at home with each other, and I’ll always cherish Elmont for providing me with that type of atmosphere.”
Ankush Ngg, our mathematical and scientific superstar! Ankush will be headed to Farmingdale State College to study Mechanical Engineering. In the same regard, while in high school, Ankush participated in a lot of STEM-related clubs, including: National Science Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Honor society, Mathletes, and Tech club. Of all the activities, Ankush shares he will miss Tech Club the most because of the “interesting projects like building drones, solar powered race cars, and other tech related projects that interest me.” Ankush only began attending Elmont in 9th grade and it taught him a lot. He considers the people of Elmont very friendly and felt this taught him to become very social. For his successes, Ankush wants to thank his parents, as they are the main reason why he has reached his level of achievement, as well as his teachers and specifically his guidance counselor, Ms. Sanju Liclican. What’s Ankush going to miss most about Elmont Memorial? “My friends and the memories we made in Elmont,” and he adds, “The professors in college won't be as caring about my grades as the Elmont teachers, so I will definitely miss my teachers as well.”
Last, but not least, cheerful scholar Alexis Robert will be pursuing a career in Forensic Pathology while studying at the University of New Haven. In high school, Alexis was a participant in multiple honor societies, including World Language, Tri-M, and Rho Khappa. She was also part of the band during her entire time at Elmont, and a part of the Superintendent Council. In her later years, Alexis joined the Gay-Straight Alliance and the Yearbook Comittee. For sports, Alexis was a cheerleader from grades eight to twelve and feels she will probably miss cheer the most: “I loved the friends I made, and I loved performing for people at games and at pep-rallies; being a cheerleader made me a leader and overall a confident woman and I hope everyone gets to have a similar experience in whatever they pursue.” Alexis learned many valuable lessons during her time at Elmont, including to be independent while also maintaining the ability to community - a skill she finds crucial to personal success. Elmont also taught her to manage time and reach out to others when assistance is needed - both skills she considers “a huge part of growing up and making smart decisions.” For props, Alexis would like to shout out Mr. Squillace, who was her Algebra 2 teacher in the tenth grade who helped her realize “that the only thing keeping me from success was myself.” Like many of the twenty four students who came before her, she will miss being able to see her friends all the time: “I didn’t realize how much of a luxury that was until now. Having all of your old friends in your classes, and seeing them during lunch and free periods is a blessing and it’s something you shouldn’t take for granted!”
