Season 1 of The Chosen introduces Jesus of Nazareth through the eyes of the diverse and flawed individuals who first encountered him. The story begins by focusing on characters burdened by their circumstances: Mary Magdalene, a woman tormented by demons; Simon, a fisherman drowning in debt to Rome; Matthew, a brilliant but ostracized tax collector; and Nicodemus, a leading Pharisee whose faith is shaken by reports of miracles. As the season unfolds, Jesus performs his first public miracle at a wedding in Cana, engages in a life-changing conversation with a Samaritan woman at a well, and calls his first disciples, including Simon Peter after a miraculous catch of fish. The season builds by weaving these individual stories together, showing how Jesus's radical teachings and healings drew a passionate following, while also attracting the unwanted attention of both Roman and religious authorities, setting the stage for his expanding public ministry.
Season 2 of The Chosen explores the growing fame of Jesus and the personal and logistical challenges that come with his expanding ministry. As the disciples travel through Samaria, Syria, and surrounding regions, they grapple with their own internal conflicts, jealousies, and misunderstandings of Jesus's mission. The season focuses heavily on the disciples' preparation for a greater role, as Jesus begins sending them out to preach and heal on their own. Major plotlines include the ominous arrest and imprisonment of John the Baptist, a personal crisis of faith for Mary Magdalene that sends her spiraling back into her old life, the healing of a leper on the road, and the miraculous healing of a paralytic at the Pool of Bethesda. The season culminates with Jesus and his followers making extensive preparations for the delivery of his most important teaching, the Sermon on the Mount, which he begins to preach to a massive crowd in the finale.
