Welcome to the 4th Grade FAST Reading resource page! This page is designed to help parents understand the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST), how it impacts student progress, and ways to support reading at home.
The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) is a statewide progress monitoring system that evaluates students' reading comprehension and literacy skills. It is given three times a year to track growth and determine proficiency.
To be promoted to 5th grade in Florida, students must demonstrate proficiency in reading based on the FAST assessment and classroom performance. Hereβs what you need to know:
βοΈ Proficiency Requirement: Students must score at least a Level 2 or higher on the FAST Reading assessment.
βοΈ Good Cause Exemptions: If a student does not meet the promotion score, they may be promoted based on alternative assessments, teacher recommendations, or a portfolio of work showing mastery of standards.
βοΈ Intervention & Support: Students who score below proficiency will receive targeted interventions, additional support, and progress monitoring throughout the school year.

The FAST assessment uses a 1-5 scoring scale, where Level 3 and above indicate grade-level proficiency. Hereβs what each level means:
Level 5: π Mastery β Your child is performing well above grade level and demonstrating strong reading skills.
Level 4: β Proficient β Your child is reading above grade level and showing solid comprehension skills.
Level 3: π― On Grade Level β Your child is meeting grade-level expectations in reading.
Level 2: β οΈ Below Grade Level β Additional reading support is needed to help strengthen comprehension.
Level 1: π¨ Significantly Below Grade Level β Intensive intervention is required to build foundational skills.

The Florida 4th Grade Reading Standards are the key to unlocking your child's reading success! πβ¨ These standards focus on skills like understanding stories, building vocabulary, and improving comprehension through both fun and challenging texts. π§ π Students will dive into informational and literary texts, practicing things like identifying themes, analyzing characters, and making connections. π These are the same skills that will be tested on the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST), so you can be confident that your child is on the right track! β For more details, check out the official Florida standards and assessment info here:
