Frequently Asked Questions

How do I listen to your show?

Tune into 90.5 FM (if you're within the signal's reach) or KVHS.com on Sunday and Thursday nights at 7PM.

Are episodes available online to stream or download?

No.  The Beat of Diablo cannot make copyrighted music available to listeners without going through an outlet that is paying annual fees with BMI, ASCAP, etc...

Is your show available to stream on Spotify, Apple Music, or elsewhere?

No, but the show's producer occasionally makes Spotify playlists that are related to the show, like this one.

How do I get on your show?

If you've got some local music that you'd like considered for the show, fill out this form.

How is The Beat of Diablo funded?

The Beat of Diablo is a volunteeer effort.  The show's producer and host is local music advocate Dave Hughes.  He works closely with the station manager and head programmer, who both volunteer for KVHS as well.

Where can I get some swag?

The Beat of Diablo doesn't currently have any merch, but you can always grab a free KVHS sticker at several independent Concord businesses, all of which are listed at KVHS.com

What regions constitute as "local" for this local music program?

Optimally within the signal's reach, but most music on the show is from the East Bay.  Having said that, we'll play stuff from the Greater Bay Area, including the peninsula, South Bay, North Bay, and even Sacramento.

Will you interview me or my band?

The Beat of Diablo exists to promote the music community as a whole.  While some artists are occasionally highlighted, elevating single acts above the community is not something the show's producer is interested in.

Can I come into the studio and perform on the radio?

The studio itself is inactive, and in the midst of legal negotiations between Mount Diablo Unified School District - the station's owners - and Clayton Valley Charter High School, the residents of the campus where KVHS was born before the school went charter in 2012.  In fewer words, KVHS is not set up for live on-air performances.

Is there a way to call into the show and make a request?

The Beat of Diablo is pre-recorded, typically on Wednesdays.  If you'd like to make a request, we'd need it before the Wednesday prior to airtime.  TIP: we're more likely to air if you send in a voice recording.

Do you put on live events?

The Beat of Diablo has organized /hosted a couple shows at Vinnie's Bar & Grill, and routinely curates the music for Creative Concord's Art & Music Jam in Todos Santos Plaza.  Live music is not the focus of this show, but these efforts help to attract new listeners.

What's Concord Rock City?

It's a term that's been thrown around the Concord music scene for decades, referring to those that contribute as artists, venues, promoters, audience, and friends.  It doesn't "belong" to anyone.  The website ConcordRockCity.com hosts links to recent local releases that you might hear on The Beat of Diablo, and is owned and managed by the show's producer/host.

What's up with the newspaper column of the same name?

The column actually came first.  Like the radio show, it's a Dave Hughes Music product that's featured on a third party outlet.  The monthly column is currently featured at The Pioneer.

Can you plug my upcoming show and/or release?

Possibly.  You'll need to get the information to Dave at least a week in advance.  Also, think of these mentions more as PSAs than "plugs".  KVHS is not selling anything to anyone, but we're happy to provide information to the community.

I often hear on the show that you play "music of all genres," but I've noticed there hasn't been any Contemporary Christian.  Why is that?

One of the restraints the station has in terms of content is that we cannot play anything overtly political or religious.  This has a lot to do with the educational license being held by a public school district.

Do you ever play Green Day, Journey, Metallica, or CCR?

No.
