Cologne based duo Monsters for Breakfast consists of Thea Soti (HU) and Mascha Corman (GER) - singers who create their own improvised stories by using their voices only:
"Two voices who celebrate the freedom of stepping outside the usual tonal-rhythmical framework, musical gestures and compositions" - http://monstersforbreakfast.tilda.ws/
The two duos quickly noticed a similarity in their visions about vocal improvisation at their first encounter in 2016 and decided to join forces in a double vocal project performing around Germany and Denmark in 2017.
The Art of Escapism and Monsters for Breakfast are two projects that are a part of a vocal improvisation movement that has had a pronounced growth in Europe over the last decades. Both projects are striving to spread a wider picture of what it means to use the voice as an independent instrument, as we still rarely hear the voice being used in any other role than the lead vocal or a choir. All four singers research on the possibilities that voice brings as an instrument, constantly trying to cross limitations in the pursuit of free expression.
The contrast between the acoustic Monsters for Breakfast and the usage of electronics in the Art of Escapism, makes a vast material for further research, diverse performances, and educational workshops.
TAOE and MFB invite dancers to a cross disciplinary collaboration, where voice and movement communicate with each other as equal and complementary players.
One of the recent effects of this collaborations was the performance "Liquid Fears" held in Maschinenhaus, Essen on October 4th.
Dancers involved in the cooperation: Anna Lene Nölder (GER) ~ Elsa Artmann (GER) ~ Magdalena Öttl (GER) ~ Antonia Stäcker (GER)
Double vocals project extends to organising workshops and art labs for professional singers and dancers.
These events are open for everyone who are interested in knowing more about the improv-techniques that MFB and TAOE has been working over the years. The participants take part in practical exercises together with the two duos to their improve listening abilities and voice awareness and learn instant composing.
Recent workshops were being held at the dance academy Zentrum Für Zeitgenössischen Tanz and ON Neue Music in Cologne during the tour in Germany.
