Raised in British Columbia, Thea has always been an avid reader and lover of the mysterious. She would spend her days daydreaming of all the stories she wished to write one day. In elementary school, she would get in trouble for reading during recess instead of playing soccer with the other kids. Aside from reading, Thea enjoys watching horror movies, learning new crafts, and playing video games in her free time.
She found her love of writing from her sixth grade teacher, Mrs. Stephanie Nielsen, and her love of literature from her twelfth grade teacher, Mr. Tim Shoveller. These teachers opened Thea’s mind to expressing herself through words.
Through the support of her friends and family, Thea received honours for her BA in English Literature and her MA in Social Theory.
Thea C. Perales is a Filipino-Canadian writer and scholar specializing in monster theory and literature. She intends to pursue her PhD in Gothic Literature to one day teach as a university professor. Her work involves decolonizing colonial narratives of Filipino mythology and westernized stereotypes of Southeast Asian women. Through a biopolitical lens, Thea's scholarly essays focus on the "monstrous feminine" and the "monstrous body" which analyzes the various ways in which women's bodies are demonized/villainized in media.
In August 2026, Thea has the privilege of presenting a graduate paper titled, "Ageing the "Abject": The Horror of Ageing Women through the "Male Gaze,"" for the Romancing the Gothic 2026 Online Conference: 'More Terrors Than Her Reason Could Justify'.
Thea continues to challenge oppressive systems through the use of theory and literature to amplify marginalized voices, as seen in her first published short story, “Tabi Tabi Po!” with DILIM Press. Her short story seeks to deconstruct colonial influences in Philippine mythology, while navigating a maternal relationship of adoration and understanding.
