Animal: North American River Otter (Lontra canadensis)
Reason: Otters have always liked me, up at my cabin in Wisconsin they would often follow my kayak around. They are fiercely protective of their family and home and I think that's very admirable (and much like me!). They're also just totally adorable.
Threats: Pollution and decreasing water quality,
Animal: Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)
Reason: I remember when they were much more endangered and seeing the Minnesota species repopulate gives me hope.
Threats: Habitat loss and contamination of food sources
Animal: Common Loon (Gavia immer)
Reason: They're loons! I like their calls. Also they're loons!
Threats: Contaiminant spills and fishing
Animal: Inky Cap Mushrooms (Coprinopsis atramentaria)
Reason: This is my favorite mushroom because it melts into gooey black ink and they used to use it as pen ink in medieval times.
Threats: Climate and environmental change.
Animal: Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina)
Reason: I like the snapping noises they make. I like when they hiss.
Threats: Pet trade, environmental pollutants, habitat degradation, cars and vehicles, and commercial fishing.
Animal: Black-Eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis)
Reason: I like how cute and round they are and how they hop around!
Threats: Climate change and urbanization.
Animal: Painted turtle (Chrysemys picta)
Reason: I think painted turtles are beautiful and I loved going up to the cabin and racing the turtles with my brother when I was a young boy.
Threats: Habitat destruction and vehicle threats
