I didn’t expect that the hardest battle I’d face after military service wouldn’t involve combat boots or field exercises—but bureaucracy, silence, and indifference.
My name is Chris. I’m a disabled veteran, and like many others, I turned to the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment (VR&E) program with hope. Hope for support. Hope for retraining. Hope for a future beyond pain, injury, and loss.
What I found instead was a system that was disorganized, dismissive, and, too often, dehumanizing.
This blog is my journal, my archive, and my protest. It’s a place to document my experiences navigating the VA system—specifically the VR&E program—from being ignored by counselors, to having critical decisions about my future made without explanation, to fighting tooth and nail for services I was told I’d earned.
But this blog isn’t just about me. It’s for every veteran who has been left in the dark, talked down to, or pushed aside by the very system that promised to help. It’s for those trying to decode acronyms, policies, and vague emails while dealing with real-world struggles—physical, emotional, and financial.
I’m not a lawyer or an insider. I'm not VA-accredited. I’m a veteran telling the truth—because too many of us have been silenced for too long.
Stay with me as I share my story, break down VA processes, and explore what real reform could look like. Whether you’re just beginning your VR&E journey or have scars of your own, I hope this blog helps you feel a little less alone—and a lot more empowered.
