Gathering Evidence

Using Note Cards for Research

When using note cards for research you want to create two types of cards:

  1. Source citation cards or work cited cards
  2. Evidence cards.

The slide show above shows samples and explanations for how to create each type of card.

Source citation cards contain the information from each source you use to gather evidence so later you may properly cite the work in your text and in the works cited list. If using a lot of electronic resources, you might consider using this online Works Cited Worksheet.

Evidence cards are used to gather pieces of evidence and information you will later organize into your paper and to draw conclusions.

Demo of how to create/ use Notecards for research

A great video that models how to create and use note cards for research. Any time I tried to skip this step, I regretted it when it came to producing my final product.

The last two minutes of the video show how to use the cards to outline your paper and demonstrate why it is important to only have ONE FACT per card.

Active REading: The Art of Annotation

When reading for research or learning, we need to foster a conversation with a text. Annotation is a skill to help us focus and enrich our interaction with a text. Moreover, it creates a record of our thinking as we read -- which is a major part of the WORK of research -- so that we do not have to redo that work as we approach the creating our final product (paper, presentation, etc).
