Project description

This project aims to carry out the first theoretically guided, cross-linguistic investigation of cumulativity. It will test the typological predictions of different semantic theories of cumulativity concerning (i) the class of expressions that can `partake' in cumulativity, (ii) the semantic mechanism underlying cumulativity and (iii) the relation between cumulativity and quantifier scope. It will use a novel approach to cross-linguistic semantic research, employing the open-ended, open-source database Terraling and supplementing this research with descriptive work with individual native-speaker linguists.

The period of funding by the FWF (Austrian Science Fund) is 02/2020 - 01/2023
