Speaking before the sale, Oliver White, Bonhams Head of Islamic and Indian Art and auctioneer, said: "This spectacular sword is the greatest of all the weapons linked to Tipu Sultan still in private hands. Its close personal association with the Sultan, its impeccable provenance traceable to the very day it was captured, and the outstanding craftsmanship that went into its manufacture make it unique and highly desirable."

Nima Sagharchi, Group Head of Islamic and Indian Art, said: "The sword has an extraordinary history, an astonishing provenance and unrivalled craftsmanship. It was no surprise it was so hotly contested between two phone bidders and a bidder in the room. We are delighted with the result."

Of the many weapons removed from the palace of Tipu Sultan after the fall of his royal stronghold at Seringapatam on 4 May 1799, few have such resonance nor such a close connection to Tipu Sultan, the Tiger of Mysore, than the Bedchamber Sword, found in his private quarters after the battle. Unquestionably part of Tipu's own arsenal, the sword is arguably the finest and most important of the weapons with a proven personal association with the ruler.

As described by Francis Buchanan in his on-the-spot account describing Tipu's palace immediately after the siege, a sword lay within reach of the Sultan while he slept. (On constant alert against attack, Tipu slept in a hammock suspended from the ceiling of his locked and bolted bedchamber with a pair of pistols and a sword by his side). The weapon is of exceptional quality. The blade, which is inscribed 'The Sword of the Ruler' is particularly fine. It was manufactured by Mughal swordsmiths following the model of German blades introduced to India in the 16th century. The hilt is inlaid in exquisitely executed gold calligraphy with five of the qualities of God and two invocations calling on God by name.

The sword was presented to Major General David Baird, by the army 'as a token of their high esteem of his courage and conduct in the assault with he commanded and in which Tipo Sultan was slain.' Baird had led the soldiers on May 4 which finally ended the month-long siege of Seringapatam.

A fabled sword found in the private bedchamber of 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan has broken all auction records for an Indian object for Bonhams in London by fetching over GBP 14 million at its Islamic and Indian Art sale this week.

The bedchamber sword of Tipu Sultan, the 18th century ruler of Mysuru, has sold for 14 million pounds ($17.4 million or Rs 140 crore) at an auction in London. Auction house Bonhams, which organised the sale, said the price on Tuesday was seven times the estimate. Bonhams further said that the sword was the most important of the weapons with proven personal association with the ruler. Tipu Sultan won fame in wars of the late 18th century. He fought against the Marathas on several occasions between 1775 and 1779.

"The sword has an extraordinary history, an astonishing provenance and unrivalled craftsmanship. It was no surprise it was so hotly contested between two phone bidders and a bidder in the room. We are delighted with the result," Nima Sagharchi, group head of Islamic and Indian Art at Bonhams, said in a statement.

Items taken by the British from Tipu have long held huge fascination among collectors. This sword had been offered by descendants of General Baird in September 2003 at London numismatist Dix Noonan Webb when it sold for 150,000.

The 18th century warrior king lived and died by the sword. But for the crew and cast who were working to bring him to life in a TV serial, it ended in a different, more horrifying ordeal: fire. Last fortnight, a devastating blaze swept through Premier Studios in Mysore, where actor-director Sanjay Khan was shooting a tele-serial based on Bhagwan Gidwani's historical novelThe Sword of Tipu Sultan. The toll: 42 dead and at least 25. including Khan, seriously injured.

Themahurat for the 52-part serial - estimated to cost over Rs 4 crore - was held on October 2 at the Lalit Mahal Palace and everything about the serial was done in epic proportions. More than 100 artistes and crew were brought in from Bombay to help the local talent.Tipu Sultanwould have had a running time of 40 hours, over five months.

The fire broke out late in the evening of February 8 when Khan had just commenced shooting the second episode. The scene was that of the wedding of Tipu Sultan, and was being shot in what is called the 'C room of the studio, a cavernous 60 ft by 120 ft enclosure which was set up as adurbarhall. According to the studio employees, Sanjay was to take shots of fireworks that accompanied the wedding.

The speed and intensity of the fire gave little chance to the 100-odd crew who were on the spot. The large room had only two exits and one of them was blocked by shooting equipment. Sanjay Khan himself was trapped in the fire and like a true captain waited for most of the crew to rush out before he himself staggered out - his body badly burnt. Most of the victims were unit members from Bombay and the dead included four junior artistes. Though no major artiste besides Khan was present on the scene when the fire broke out, actress Neena Gupta had a fortuitous escape from the inferno: she had just stepped out of the sets to feed her three-month-old child.

Krishnamurthy Rao, 19, an engineering student who resides on the premises of the studio was just returning home after eating outside when he saw the studio go up in flames. "It was a terrifying sight, there was only one exit and people were rushing out in single file, their clothes ablaze." Rao saw at least seven screaming victims stumble out and jump into a water fountain just outside the studio. When fire personnel went in a few hours later after dousing the fire, they found 27 charred bodies on the floor of the set.

For Khan, the gory mishap could not have come at a worse time. The aging actor already had the Tipu project cleared by Doordarshan and the episodes were scheduled to go on the box from April 26. Khan had already shot a pilot of the serial which had received excellent notice in the press. He was also fighting to establish himself as a director of merit after some set-backs in the film world.

An ongoing production, Sar Zameen starring Vinod Khanna was stuck due to a problem with the dates and his previous film Kala Dhanda Gore Log was a flop. But with Tipu Sultan, everything seemed to be going Khan's way. In an extraordinary gesture the Karnataka Government even lent Tipu's original sword-it was not in the studio when the fire broke - to Khan for the shooting. Said Khan's wife Zarine: "Sanjay was really passionate about the project - he was confident of making the best serial ever - one that matched world standards. The pilot itself was gorgeous."

The 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan's fabled sword found in the private bedchamber has broken all auction records for an Indian object for Bonhams in London by fetching over GBP 14 million at its Islamic and Indian Art sale this week.

"This spectacular sword is the greatest of all the weapons linked to Tipu Sultan still in private hands," said Oliver White, Bonhams' Head of Islamic and Indian Art and auctioneer, in a statement ahead of the sale on Tuesday.

Historians claim of the many weapons removed from the palace of Tipu Sultan after the fall of his royal stronghold at Seringapatam in May 1799, few have such resonance or such a close connection to Tipu Sultan. Unquestionably part of Tipu's own arsenal, the bedchamber sword is dubbed among the finest and most important of weapons with a proven personal association with the ruler.

Manufactured by Mughal swordsmiths following the model of German blades introduced to India in the 16th century, the sword itself is of "exceptional" quality, with the blade inscribed The Sword of the Ruler".

A magnificent Tipu Sultan sword from the late 18th century. Tipu Sultan (1750-1799) was the ruler of Mysore until his death at the Siege of Seringapatam in 1799 where he died on the battlefield defending his kingdom.

The Indian blade of pattern welded, or mechanical Damascus steel, has a sharp back edge on the distal third of the blade known as a "yelman" and takes its shape from early central Asian swords, and the later evolved Turkish kilij sword.

This sword shares many features found on known and published Tipu and Tipuesque swords. The grip on the exhibition example offered here has an octagonal form, much like several others, specifically a tiger hilted sword in the British Museum (see Archer/Rowell/Skelton, no.33) which was once in the possession of Lord Clive (Clive of India).

Tipu Sultan's sword was estimated to sell for an inordinate $2.5 million. However, yesterday, this prize weapon was auctioned in London and fetched a staggering $17.5million (14 million). This not only breaks the highest price paid for a single sword, but also sets a new world record for any Indian/Islamic object.

If you are quick, and do a Google search today, you will find the Sword Encyclopedia list the most expensive sword ever sold as the 18th Century Boateng Saber. Sold in auction twice, originally for $5.93 million in 2006 and for $7.7 million in 2008, it features decorations and inscriptions alluding to the Chinese emperor Qianlong of the Qing dynasty.

This week, however, Tipu Sultan's legendary bedchamber sword was sold at Bonhams Islamic and Indian Art sale in London. The prize weapon, which was estimated to fetch between 1,500,000-2,000,000, ended up reaching 14 million ($17.5m USD) at the sale in London breaking the records. So what has made it so valuable?

This significant historical site is enjoyed by thousands of visitors every year, who are interested in learning about Tipu Sultan's life and legacy. However, the legendary warrior's sword will now vanish into the private collection of an anonymous billionaire, maybe never to be seen again. 006ab0faaa
