Golems aren't exactly a race, but a product of magic due to a malumancer's pursuit of immortality. By meditating too much, they become one with their source, at the cost of their sanity, and their identity. While golems were more common back then, there are still some that try to do this. However, it is now a practice that is heavily regulated by the World Mage Council, since trying to be a golem often leads to a lot of destruction, especially in urban areas.
All golems come from manaborn individuals who have chosen to undergo the procedure of Arcanachrysalis. Each golem has a core inside of their 'chest'. This is where their brain is usually found. If one uses a nullifier near a golem, they lose energy or slow down. If the nullifier is attached to their chest, they go to a comatose state until that nullifier is taken out. If the brain is stabbed or damaged, they die.
Arcanachrysalis happens when a malumancer meditates around a tree or any place with a lot of organic matter, making their arcane lobe attach further to their vicinity, eventually pulling them to the person to supply the body with nutrients to power their arcane lobe. Soon enough, the manaborn enters a comatose state, powering their brain off so that the body maximizes its efficiency.
This takes years, and even decades in order for the mage to wake up. During this time, venators are known to "harvest" these individuals if they do not have a permit to become a golem.
Once the manaborn's body has fully transformed, they will become a phage, or commonly known as a fleshwalker. Their mind is now fractured, and their whole body is now optimized for consuming.
A phage is a person that has transformed into a creature of hunger and aggression. They eat everything, from plants around them, to animals, and even bacteria, dirt, or fecal matter, in order to absorb them into their body, to be used to make them grow.
Phages are described to make clicking and screeching sounds, as well as parts of their body being covered in plant, wood, flesh, and mushroom-like textures. They will attack humans, or any animal they encounter. This is one of the biggest reasons why the World Mage Council heavily regulates golem transformations, as phages lose their sense of reason and only start to consume.
A way that some countries deal with this is by putting phages where consuming organic material is very useful. Examples include the Hreinngarian Golem Order, where their phages are put into containers at the bottom parts of the city of Naerem, where their sewage system ends. This makes them crucial for the city's sanitation.
Phages usually roam the world for around several decades, reaching to a century.
The strength and speed of a phage is actually 2 or 3 times than that of an average adult human male.
Once the phage has eaten enough organic matter, they will try to seek some sort of large tree, which they would attach to in order to develop their body into a Tree Golem. This process often takes 5-10 years.
In this phase, their body starts entering a state of hyper efficiency where they start building their own body. This is also the time when the golem starts redeveloping their mind. They become sentient once more, and start to develop their vocal chords. Scientists have recently discovered that these 'Post-Phages' can communicate by blinking their eyes on certain ways based on what scientists ask them to.
Made up of wood and some connective tissue underneath, Tree Golems are the product of the 2nd arcanachrysalis. They are known to be very strong, and are the fastest golem type, and still eat organic matter, but since they are more sentient, they do not eat anything. They often only eat trees, or other animals. This phase often lasts for 1 to 5 centuries. They are the most common type of golem in the world, with less than 300 individuals currently alive.
The strength of a tree golem is 6 times more than the average adult human male. They can run as fast as humans, but they often have terrifying grip strength. Records have shown that a tree golem once ripped a man in two without much struggle.
Tree Golems are common in Hreinngar, where they are taken cared of, but some Tree Golems can also be found in Valenti, Karthus, which they then move towards the Ogroid Highlands.
These golems are known to develop 'vines' that continue to grow and attach themselves to organic matter, such as trees, that will be used for energy consumption. Near the end of their cycle, they will develop plates on their body made of calcium, which they often use to put stone boulders in. Scientists are still puzzled as to why happens, but a leading theory suggests that as the tree golem grows, their body starts to become unable to take in organic matter as energy, and their leaves soon start acting to take energy from the sun itself. But, since leaves aren't enough to power them, there is a layer of sensitive tissue underneath these stones that they will use to harness some solar energy. They usually make deep booming sounds at the start, but slowly develop their vocal chords as they grow to their first century.
It is well known that a Tree Golem is often as strong as a giant in terms of strength. Some Tree Golems, such as Svekar III have been reported to be even stronger than most giants, the average tree golem is not like this. They need a lot of energy, and may be seen busy absorbing nutrients from the soil, or returning to their duties in Hreinngar's sewage system. As a matter of fact, most tree golems go here to ensure that they have a lot of energy.
As time goes by, Tree Golems begin growing a layer of calcium and keratin outside of their body. Soon, this becomes a 'rock-like' substance.
Rock Golems often have this phase for 10 years, as this formative year usually is spent collecting rocks to attach to their body. As the rock golem attaches more rocks to their body, it then starts using these rocks as a surface layer to absorb more energy from the sun, and to protect their new tissues that make it possible to convert sun rays into energy. This creates an effect where the golem has a mixture of rock, wood, and moss all around their body.
As their cells fully develop, and their body is fully covered in rocks, their body starts finalizing its process to take energy from the sun.
The stones may not be a part of their body, but it is a protective layer for their next phase. Stone Golems often stay in this phase for more than 500 years, and they often describe it as a time when they explore the world to find a place to rest.
During this time, their cells keep developing on learning to absorb energy from the sun. While this is the case, they stop eating.
Stone Golems in the current age seems to come from the mage wars, and the last years before the first sun. Historians believe that the reason why there was a lot of these stone golems was due to the end of the centurion wars, but there is also evidence to suggest that there were more stone golems during its start. It is through their recollection of data that Karthusian scholars actually had a more accurate retelling of the wars before the first sun. Stone golems speak with a relatively deep voice.
Stone Golems are known to be stronger than giants, and rival big beasts such as Dragons, and Umbragils. They are slow, and against a trained human, their attacks are predictable. However, a hit from a stone golem often means instant death, as their stone hands easily break bones. However, due to their wisdom, they are often averse to fighting, and only do so when necessary. They are still human, however, and may sometimes still try to fight. There are only less than about 50 stone golems in the world according to the World Mage Council.
As the stone golem reaches its maximum energy capacity, they will use their stone hands to carve out caves, where they are in a perfect stop there the sun will shine through. This is to ensure that there is no disturbance within their slumber, which they will be in for about a thousand years. Their stone armor ensures that they will be connected from the caves collapsing. Their stone shells also protect them from waking up. Some stone golems try to climb mountains in order to fully harness the sun's powers. While being isolated, it is still risky if they are found by hikers.
However, there is a recorded instance of golems deciding to sleep in open areas, which leaves them open for attackers. An example is the sleeping golem "The Fool", named by the World Mage Council, and protected by Venators day and night to avoid anyone from waking them up.
This final metamorphosis is one of the most crucial parts of a golem's life to finally achieve immortality. In this stage, their body is forced to adapt by relying only on the sun as its energy source. Their vines will start grabbing iron deposits from the area, and they will use such deposits to create a combination of organic and artificial body parts to form panels around their body that efficiently turns the suns rays into solar energy.
Awaking a golem is harmful, as it may often lead to them being in the middle of development, causing them to be able to live for centuries more, but never reach their longest lifespan. Sleeping golems are hard to find, as they are good at looking like normal rocks. It is only when one uses a pickaxe, oftentimes randomly, that they accidentally crack a part of the shell of the golem, leading them to awaken early.
"The Fool"
When a golem enters its 3rd Arcanachrysalis, it must find a secure spot, since if its body detects any sort of attack, such as someone trying to mine them, their body uses its defense mechanism to wake them up in the middle of development. This leads to stone golems turning into "metalic" golems, where they undergo a painful process of coming out of their shell, only to reveal a "metallic" 8-10 feet "metal golem" that now has a limited life, and cannot gain energy from the sun.
Their body seems to be made out of some sort of shiny carbon-based material, that has a gray or blue color.
They do not eat, nor do they need to. All their energy is stored within, and it all will run out after decades until they die. The longest living cursed golem reached at least 300 years.
They are still able to speak, but some individuals suffer speech impediments, usually because they almost reached maturity.
Cursed Golems are as strong as orcs, and they do not feel pain. They are considered a pitiful creature, as centuries of trying to achieve immortality have led to nothing, living their final years of weakness and decay.
Worldbuilder's Note: You cannot play as a Metal Golem.
Metal Golems are the rarest and oldest of the golems. A metal golem is at least more than a thousand years old. Some of these golems such as Titanicus, have lived for over 7 thousand years, and has been protecting Hreinngar ever since he was awakened during Hreinngar's defense against Trost - which scientists earlier thought was him awakening from his hibernation, only to find out that Titanicus simply sleeps a lot.
Metal golems have some sentience in them. They are willing to cooperate, but they seem to primarily function via their arcane lobe, which means that their entire body is powered by magic and solar energy. They seem to not act similar to humans, but there is an ongoing debate on whether or not this is due to their brain structure, or simply the wisdom they have gained for such a long time.
Using a series of holes on their back, as well as organic matter that was left from when they were a stone golem, Metal Golems are known to speak via roars. While some metal golems like Titanicus are able to speak in one word per minute, most metal golems like Kalsinika and Orus are only able to communicate via tapping sounds and clicks.
Metal golems are known to be so ancient, that their names often are the origins of words people use today, such as "Titanic" or even the giant classification for Titans coming from Titanicus, or Calxum's name evolving to the word Calcium.
Metal Golems attack in a way that has a huge windup time. They first charge up their energy, before unleashing a quick and deadly strike. This is why a really well trained human or angel has a small chance at defeating a titan, such as with Sir Frian of Hreinngar, who won a duel against Titanicus in a spar, or Staff Sergeant Simon Kylen, who used his custom-made VAC-M1 to shoot the core of Irash - although this is highly contested. However, this does not mean that it is easy to defeat a golem. When they hit, it is definitive. No one has survived from a hit from a metal golem, may that be dragons, umbragils, or even Leviathans.
There is a legend in Porthosian History, that a golem named Eureka Rimus arrived in their lands during the Centurion Wars. This golem seemed to have been searching for anyone strong enough to fight him, by roaring and tapping. When the locals described a Leviathan that terrorized their coasts, the golem simply walked to the coast and grabbed the biggest oar from one of their boats, before walking to the sea, descending to its depths. After an hour, the golem returned back to the coast with the Leviathan's dead body. The locals then screamed "Eureka", thus making them call the golem of such name. Later Porthosians then gave him the name Eureka the Oar handler, or simply "Eureka Remus", which evolved to Eureka Rimus. Scholars have compared the description of Eureka Rimus to the current living golem Orus, and have confirmed that they are the same person. This confirmed that not only are metal golems capable of holding their breath for at least one hour, or at least, do not need as much oxygen compared to normal humans, but they also possess immense strength.
Metal Golems have an average height of around 17-20 feet. Titanicus being the tallest at 20 Feet, with Orus being 19, and Kalsinika being 17.
While there is evidence that there are more metal golems out there, only 3 metal golems remain, and are both popular and mysterious.
Titanicus is known to constantly sleep near the walls of Hreinngar. He has never moved since Hreinngar's independence, and only awakens from time to time in order to conduct interviews, or to walk around Hreinngar every decade for people to celebrate. His resting area is known to be covered in flowers and gifts. It is through Titanicus that we have some information about the northern perspective of the centurion wars , as unlike the Porthosian Empire, Trost did not have as much records of their history and culture. However, Titanicus does not remember his age, as he has admitted that time has become blurry for him, leading many to speculate that he may be older than most aspects in the world.
Kalsinika is known to wander the Ogroid Highlands, protecting the lands from excessive mining. It is said that the word 'calcium' actually originated from her name. While interviews with her are limited, she has confirmed that she was once a female elf, and was a more neutral force during the Centurion Wars.
Orus, meanwhile, is known as the most violent, attacking humans and hunting creatures, mostly for sport. It is said that during the 3rd Mage War, it was not a Vonturian sniper that killed Irash, but it was Orus himself, who simply wanted to have a battle. Experts speculate that Orus may have been a former berserkir from Hrothgar, but it is unclear and also disputed, as a berserkir would need to be seen as physically strong to be given that title, and berserkirs did not arrive in historical evidence until the early remnants of the centurion wars. However that may be, it is clear that Orus seems to have a good relationship with the dwarves, as his shell contains layers of Dwarven Steel. He is currently in Shiniya, where he was last seen defending a tribe of Caninians from the Khubattar Khanate. The World Mage Council has since warned this tribe, informing them that Orus only wants to fight on the losing side, in order to defeat stronger forces, and does not care who he is protecting.
There is also an anonymous golem, only known as 'The Dead Elder'. In an interview with Titanicus and Kalsinika, they have shared that they do not recognize the golem, and had mostly only seen their dead corpse as they were exploring the world. Kalsinika describes The Dead Elder as someone who was already dead when she awakened from her hibernation. With titanicus however, he tells a story of a time when he saw the elder walk centuries ago, but that is the only time he saw them, leading to the speculation that magic may have been practiced way before the druids, and way before Titanicus, but even he has admitted that he has forgotten the decades when he was once a tree golem. The Dead Elder's location is as of the moment, a major tourist spot in Drasek, where markets tend to form around it. Orus does not comment, as any scholar that tried to interview him have either died, or were simply scared away by the golem.
In Florial 12, 1585, The World Mage Council published a paper reporting the potential prescence of a crystal golem. Most Karthusian Scholars dispute this, claiming that it is impossible for golems to develop non-organic compounds on their body, and have argued that there is no evidence or proof of such golems existing. Due to this, crystal golems are generally known as only existing theoretically.
