Demons

Demons are well known for their menacing look. Glowing red eyes, fanged teeth, large horns, a tail, with wings and feet similar to that of a dragon. They are the Ekajians that have a natural affinity to fire, granting them a natural ability to be magically fireproof without casting such spell.

Demons are known to be highly aggressive, and it is believed that they have more adrenaline in their body compared to the average human. Their eye color is always glowing red due to pyroclastic fluids constantly burning on their iris, giving them some sort of night vision. They have a small field of view however.

Demons are often, and tend to always be found in the Ekajian Isles, but some can be found in other places such as the WATC, Drasek, and even Caedia.

Biology

Demons have a layer of skin that is pitch black, covered by another red fireproof layer of tissue called antipyrodermis, that prevents any burns called 'exohadermis', from both fire, and in some cases, even lava.

Due to this layer, demons have a very impaired sense of touch. It is almost impossible for them to feel pain, which often leads them to be unable to detect life-threatening situations. One such example is the 'Roylon Case', where a demon named Roylon was slowly stabbed in the neck, and did not know it, reportedly talked for the entire conversation, until they felt 'tired' and then 'felt' asleep.

While this sensory impairment is a large hindrance when it comes to stealth attacks, demons are known to have the opposite reaction when they are in a state of panic or fear under life-threatening situations. They enter a state of heightened aggression, and will run or fight until the threat is resolved. This is known as a 'Dark State', and their bodies often go on an incredible state of energy consumption in order to heal the body quickly, and make the body survive for as long as possible.

While dark state is possible, it is often risky, as some demons die of heart diseases if they enter such state. This is due to too much strain on the heart, and if the demon has not watched their health, their hypertension often leads to them having a severe heart stroke.

Contrary to popular misconceptions, it has been recently found out that Dragarians actually evolved from demons, as they are both connected magically to fire, but also both have the magical affinity to be immune to fire.

Half-Demons, or anyone who has some sort of demon lineage, depending on how strong the genetics has reached, may exhibit extra aggression or irritability, a weak version of a dark state, but no fireproofing.

Notable Body Parts

Arguably one of the most striking features of a demon is their horn. Tests have shown that their horns are made of keratin, followed by a protective exohadermis layer.

Due to their natural connection to Pyromancy, Demons have glowing eyes that, just recently, have been concluded to be pyroclastic materials in the iris, which creates a glowing effect.

While research is still being concluded regarding this, most scientists have concluded that demons can indeed see better at night, but often need to cover their eyes in the morning, as they have a much larger risk of glaucoma, if they have regular contact with the sun.

Demons also have tails. Karthusian researchers have yet to study the reason why this is the case, but a leading their suggests that this is their main source of pain receptor. Although it is not as efficient as human pain receptors, it still seems to be more sensitive than any part of demons skin.

This explains why in most demonic cultures, touching a demon's tail is often considered a taboo thing, and is often reserved for someone very close. A demon's tail is also sometimes filled with receptors, and they often become 'ticklish' if scratched or grabbed.

This study was conducted back in North Ravena's 'Great Demonic Purge', where members of the Order of the Holy Knights hanged 15 demons by their tails, making them either scream, laugh, or cry. Scientists and Biologists also conducted experiments to determine what these demons feel, and they have concluded that a demon's reaction to tail contact varies from person to person, but it is nonetheless a sensitive part of their bodies.

A demonic wing's capabilities can vary for each person. Usually, exercise is needed to make the wing muscles capable of lift. However, this still depends on the ethnicity of said demon. Most ethnicities, such as the imps, can fly for long periods of time without rest, while Ekajian demons only use this as a means to either glide, or increase their jump height.

Ethnicities

Ekaji-in

The most common ethnicity. Ekaji-in demons are known to have the best defense against fire, and the strongest of Dark States, but they simply cannot use their wings for flying. They only use their wings for gliding and jumping higher, which is an evolutionary trait done in order to suffer less injuries when falling from cliffsides.

Ajin

The Ajin live at the lowlands, particularly around the Selyrian mainland. They are the most popular, but also the most targetted of the demonic race. Since the 1542, it is estimated that more than 24 million demons have died due to constant genocide and racial discrimination.

Hilind

The Hilind are Ekaj-in demons who originally come from the Ekajian Isles. They are defined by their gray or ash skin.

Imp

Imps are very uncommon, almost rare. They are the weakest and skinniest of the demonic race, but their flight power is unmatched above all demons, rivaling the most powerful flying race in the world, such as Avians and Angels.

They are also defined by their abnormally long fingers, which experts believe to be an evolutionary adaptation to grab branches, or take pray easily.

While being the best fliers, they are often physically weak, with hollow bones, and soft skin.

Cambion

Often mistaken as 'half-demons', cambions are defined by their furry legs. Cambions are even more confusing since the word origin cambion comes from a rough translation meaning 'part-demon'.

To know if someone is a cambion and not, one must look at the eyes and legs. Cambions will have the demonic eyes, while half-demons will generally not have them. Cambions will also have furry legs, similar to goats, while half-demons generally won't.

Cambions will have the typical parts of a demon, such as the horns, wings, tail, and demon eyes, but their skin won't have the antipyrodermis and exohadermis, leading them to rely solely on magic for their fireproofing. While this is generally effective, as they are also the most magically attuned out of all the demons, they can oftentimes suffer from Sorcerer's Syndrome the most.

Dragarian

Known as the second-most magical demon, they are unique in terms of being the only demon race that can use not just ignis tolerantia, but also spiritus draconis.

They were labeled as a separate race before, but it was recently discovered by SUV Biologists to be similar to demons. Recent findings have suggested that Dragarians generally did not want to be considered as 'demonic' due to the stigma towards demons around the 15th century. However, it is an accepted theory that Dragarians may have been the first species of demons.

Sub-ethnicities among the Dragarian

Asobek

The asobek people are often found in Northeastern Caedia, as well as northern sulhari. They often have webbed head parts that act as fins, and are described to be an evolutionary adaptation to swim better in water.

Igra

Known as 'Shiniyan Demons', they primarily live in Xin'jang and Porthos.

Sharok

The Sharok people live around the edges of the West Arkasios bay. They are believed to be its native inhabitants until the porthosians arrived.

Sathoryos

The Sathoryans are a primarily water species that live in the coasts of porthos. They are believed to be the bridge between all the Dragarians.

Farid

The Faridi people live in Sulhari and D'hartha, and are the most common demon race in Shiniya.

Tiefling

Originally classified as their own race, due to Reedianite propaganda, scientists from the SUV have concluded that tieflings, are in fact, part of the demon ethnicities. They are the smallest ethnicity of the demons, often standing at just 4'3 and up to 5'1 feet.

Back then, they were not considered not as demons, as according to historians, their leaders immediately forced their citizens to convert to Reedianism, and developed close relationships with them before purges would happen.

Unlike demons, their skin isn't resistant to fire due to magic, but often, it is due to to flame-retardant properties in their sweat.

Another strange thing about tieflings is that their arcane lobe is slightly larger than that of a normal demon, but lesser than that of a normal manaborn. Because of this, tieflings can actually learn other types of magic and use some spells, but the drawbacks for their magic usage is immense, and often lead to further complications. This is why most of the time, tieflings simply stick to pyromancy if they are born with a larger arcane lobe.

Tieflings are scattered around the world, but are more present in West Arkasios, The Ekajian Isles, Vontur, Ravena, and Ibernus, where they are not always persecuted by the church for their race. Tieflings are a very rare sight in Shiniya.

Sub-ethnicities among the Tieflings

Blessed Ones

Tieflings that usually are found in North Ravena, Karthus, and Sicarius. They have a red skin color.

Kijifa

The Kijifa are tieflings that are common in the Ekajian Isles and northern Duskalia. They are often described by their purple skin.

Onryo

Tieflings that have a blue skin color, that are often found in Kononagari, and the mountains of the Khubatar Khanate.

Since imps are generally considered by Ekaj-in demons to be 'backward' and 'savage', demons tend to be offended when called an imp

Medium Slurs

Maligno

Originating from Sarang-Gani, historians are still trying to understand how this slur became offensive to demons. A leading theory has suggested that the Sarang-Gani may have had a very exploitative encounter with demons when they settled in the Duskalian lands.

Heavy

Jinn

In Caedia and Sulhari, the word 'jinn' is used to describe demons. Roughly translating to 'to hide', it was a stereotype that was created to describe demons who were running away from Selyria as refugees.
Urban folktales describe the jinn as people who can possess people and make them do harm.

Devil

Often used by Reedianites, this is a very strong slur that is known by all demons. Every single demon despises being called this, as centuries of Reedianite purges led them to where they are today.
'Devil' is a term that demons were called during the first years of Reedianite crusades, and is still used today by groups such as the Order of the Holy Knights.
