"Pride. Honor. Strength. Dominance."
General Hrifir Gorlansen
Hreinngarian General
The Kingdom of Hreinngar is a large and powerful nation home to the wealthiest, and most powerful families in all of Selyria. Hreinngar is currently the second strongest nation in Selyria, only behind the Kingdom of Trost. But this metric is slowly changing due to the fact that Hreinngar is becoming a dominant trading hub in the region.
Before Hreinngar was even founded as a kingdom, the Chiefdom of Hreinngar was a relatively medium-sized civilization that sprung up in the mid 800 BFS. Hreinngar relied on fish, agriculture, and livestock as their prime export towards their mother nation - The Empire of Trost.
Although many scholars still debate the topic, the founding of The Kingdom of Hreinngar is believed to be around 640 FS during the time of their declaration to split from the Empire of Trost during the Dark Ages. This is due to their perceived discrimination of humans by the majority giant population of Trost. The result was a huge scale war between the two sides, spanning centuries of death and bloodshed. To prevent the massive amounts of damage and destruction, the newly founded Kingdom of Hreinngar created a wall to help build a massive defensive structure against the giants. They used durgan slaves from North Castle for the construction. By 703 FS, it was completed. After the Hreinngarian Split of 640, several nations were inspired by this and did the same to split from Trost.
Hreinngar has a rich history of wars and conquest. Having finished the wall, they fought against the Empire of Trost in many battles, and won in most cases, particularly through the use of magic, which was incredibly useful in speeding up the construction of the wall, and was even more helpful in winning the different wars, known as The War of the Titans.
While the Trostians had the advantage of Mammoths, Giants, and Ice Magic, the Hreinngarians revolutionized the usage of fire magic, Dragons, Mana Nullifiers, powerful military technology, and ingenious tactics. In the end, the war turned to victory for the Hreinngarians. This however resulted in almost the extinction of dragons, and the eventual fall of the Trostian Empire. And through this, the Kingdom of Hreinngar became a dominant power in the Northern Selyria Region.
A couple years after the fall of the Empire, Hreinngarian mages started to rebel against the Hreinngarian Royal Family, due to their perceived oppression by the government. This prompted The Hreinngarian Civil War in which the Royal Family had won, but at the expense of instability in the kingdom.
A period of warlords and skirmishes followed as different factions fought for control and stability in the kingdom. Different houses would lead in this conflict. These were House Astrede, House Gunder, House Magrin, House Ibsen, House Karthus, House Sitia, and other lower houses. This conflict turned Hreinngar into a state of anarchy, which would then turn into feudalism, with each house having full control over their district. Several years following this, another conflict would arise, known as The Second Hreinngarian Civil War. Soon however, this civil war made it possible for some houses to seek peace and unity. This would result in House Ibsen, House Sitia, and House Astrede having the upper hand in unifying the houses, while House Karthus, and House Gunder would fight against this new establishment. This resulted in a large battle known as The Great Wall Conflict, which resulted in Hreinngar almost crumbling in itself. House Magrin, Karthus, and Sitia would move towards their dukedoms to form their own nations, while the rest stayed battling for scraps of the great kingdom. After this massive conflict however, House Ibsen would use this time to rise from the ashes of war to fight the allied Hreinngarian houses, as well as the Vindicators, to rebuild this new kingdom.
The restoration movement of House Ibsen started in 690 FS. A lot of reforms had to be made to ensure a war similar to the recent conflicts will not happen again. They developed laws of conflict, a code of chivalry, a law of magic to prevent rogue mages from terrorizing people, and a general strict focus towards law and order. This resulted in them being a very dominant kingdom in terms of the military and police. In 750 FS, they fought The Kingdom of North Castle as part of their campaign to conquer other nations. They won, but failed after the Northerners won their rebellion 453 years later.
The Kingdom of Hreinngar then shifted their focus towards helping Vontur fight off against the Empire of Drasek in the hopes that the instability brought by war would weaken the Republic. This plan backfired however through the use of guerilla warfare by the locals. Although the Hreinngarian Government states that Vontur is indeed part of their territory, Hreinngar has almost no governmental control over the Vonturian Government up to this day.
After the Shifter conflict, Sir Grommash Stormborn challenged King Henry Ibsen on a duel and won, immediately turning the kingdom under his rule.
Today, Hreinngar is one of the biggest exporters of wheat, armor, horses, livestock, and wizards. This makes them extremely powerful, and remains one of the strongest nations in the world.
Hreinngarian citizens focus around the idea of Pride, Strength, and Honor. It is shunned for any person in the kingdom to be timid and weak. Emotional vulnerability such as crying, angry outbursts, or signs of depression, is seen as a sign of laziness, or simply weakness. Sometimes, these are even seen as unpatriotic and disrespectful to the heroes that died for the Fatherland.
Hreinngarian men are expected to mature and be strong at an early age. Scholars theorize this as a cultural evolution because of countless years of war and instability. Playing with toys is often considered something that only toddlers do, while play-fighting or rough housing is seen as a more accepted way of male play. Hreinngarian women however are more commonly seen in housekeeping, and nursing duties, as well as farming, engineering, and educational fields. These gender roles are seen by scholars as a reflection of the roles of men to be soldiers during the times of war, while women took most of the jobs previously taken by those same men. This however does not mean that women do not hold military positions. In fact, 30% of Hreinngarian women have at least 2 years of experience as a soldier.
Hreinngarians, when they reach the age of maturity, are required to be capable of fighting. Usually, parents are required to test their children in combat and military discipline. This form of teaching is usually done to ensure strong candidates when a conscription is ordered.
Hreinngarians in general have a habit of being prideful, and sometimes even arrogant to some Selyrians. They have a habit of showing off, especially their strength to others. Hreinngarian men often test their peers physically, and this creates tension between a lot of males. This is partly the reason as to why gangs and fraternities are rampant in the city. While crime is usually very low due to the Hreinngarian City Watch, gangs would sometimes clash in the streets at night or in broad daylight. Gangs and fraternities would mark their areas with their colors. And this creates a lot of tension in the local areas. Luckily, the City Watch - The Hreinngarian Government’s main police force, watches the city closely for threats like these.
Hreinngarian fashion is always lavish and grand, with Gold plated pauldrons being their favorite accessory. Hreinngarians, especially men, would always wear some sort of armor, particularly brigandine. But men who wear plate armor are usually seen as higher status, for it is said that only the strongest can use full plate armor for their everyday lives. Fur coats are also a favorite for both men and women. Women especially, would wear fur scarfs, or dresses made of Ravenian Bison Fur.
As food in Hreinngar is plentiful, so is their diet. Hreinngar is known to host one of the best cuisines when it comes to meat; particularly, roasted beef and chicken. With a strong meat diet, scholars argue that this is a reflection of their militaristic culture.
Militarism and Nationalism plays a huge part among Hreinngar. Their government holds a romanticized view of their History as Hreinngar being the nation of heroes and legends. Their plays, songs, stories, and poems would often be about the Military of Hreinngar fighting off the Empire of Trost, or the War of the Stags, or how strong the Vindicators were. There would also be gladiatorial fights about this, but the biggest event of them all is the Annual Vetran Festival in which competitors and fighters from all over the world battle in grueling matches of combat to gain a massive sum of glory and wealth.
The Annual Vetran Festival is a yearly celebration of Hreinngar’s valor, courage, strength, pride, and dominance in the region. Fighters from all over the world gather around the Great Hall to see which nation wins the Festival.
The event starts during the 5th day of Vendemiaire. The Festival is a 7 day competition in which fighters will duel, usually until someone is knocked down. The competitions are split into 3 categories.
Duels - Where fights are only 1 on 1.
Groups - Where a 5 man team competes against another 5 man team.
Armies - Where 250 warriors complete with different equipment, fight inside the arena.
Each day is full of action. And each celebration would last until the final seconds of midnight. There is almost no sleep for the events, as managers would take shifts for rests. Sometimes, citizens would set up tents outside of the arenas to save time in watching the spectacles. And as for the main event, it always does not disappoint, according to Hreinngarians.
While it is a favorite sport, scholars from the Effectivus District of the Sovereign University of Vendeaux show evidence that this tradition of fighting for sport was originally a means to have peace between the warring houses during the 2nd Hreinngarian Civil War. And documents suggest that the original vetran festival was actually held only once every two years. Due to some time however, cultural shifts made it possible into what the festival is today.
Religion in Hreinngar is very Reedianite dominant. Although what is interesting about this place is that the sects of Reedianism is also present here, unlike other kingdoms.
Unlike its western counterpart, Traditional Reedianism revolves around the idea that The High Priestess, being the daughter of God, resurrected and arrived again in the world. Besides this distinction, they have the same set of values that the Sentoran Sect of Reedianism has, such as giving charity, helping others, having utmost faith, and other highly conservative values.
Sentoran Reedianism is the second most dominant religion in this kingdom. Their belief consists of giving charities to the poor, kneeling in front of statues of the High Priestess, and making pilgrimages to the Prime Church of St. Elizabeth. They believe that the ‘First Sun’, which states that the world started from a rebirth made by the arrival of the High Priestess sent by the one God, Solev - The God of Light. And after The High Priestess’s crucifixion, the world almost collapsed creating what was known as ‘The First Sun’, was recorded. After an entire year of disasters and tragedy, St. Elizabeth would arrive as a prophet of both God and The High Priestess.
Hreinngarian Politics is incredibly complex. With many houses gathering around the council, each of them have their own story to tell. But the biggest distinguishing factor of Hreinngarian Politics is how it is a strong Aristocracy of nobles. Although the government describes itself as a ‘Constitutional Monarchy’, the contrary is actually done in practice.
Several houses often have some control over their region similar to that of what had occurred during the Second Civil War. But because of recent reforms in the government, The Royal Family has better control over the different districts.
Laws are usually talked about by The Council of Houses. And it is these houses that are responsible as to what laws are to be passed. According to some SUV scholars, one of the fundamental reasons for the stability of this system is the undying patriotism and nationalism shown by the houses of this kingdom.
House Ibsen is the wealthiest family of Hreinngar, with access to the grand armory. They are the current ruling family. Their family members are usually soldiers, or rulers. And there is a strict code of honor amongst their bloodline.
They are one of the few surviving houses of the Old Hreinngarian Kingdom. With their fame and glory being overshadowed by House Ibsen’s massive reforms, they are best known for their role as prime defenders during The Great Wall Conflict.
They are the rulers of Vetra, or at least the prime caretakers of it. They are known as one of the biggest fighting forces in The War of The Stags, as well as having a reputation of being a big Hreinngarian stereotype. They are usually very brash and arrogant. But their strength is something that cannot be belittled.
The Kingdom of Hreinngar has a very strong and robust economy, mainly due to the Selyria Alliance. They are the main exporters of Steel, Limestone, Wheat, Horses, mages, mana nullifiers, and most importantly, gemstones. Second only to Ravena, they are the richest country in terms of gemstones like diamonds, rubies, and emeralds. Because of this, they are the prime regulators of the Gem System. Specifically, the Kingdom of Hreinngar is the home of the Central Bank of the Selyria Alliance.
The Kingdom has a strong infrastructure system. ‘Mason Women’ are usually called upon to be at the forefront of building large projects for Hreinngarian citizens. Most citizens are usually well-off, and SUV scholars conclude that 90% of Hreinngarians live above the poverty line, compared to their Selyria Alliance counterparts of having an average of 60-70%.
Trade is what makes Hreinngar incredibly powerful, but their weapons manufacturing is also something to note. The Kingdom of Hreinngar, as it currently stands, is the prime seller of most weapons throughout Selyria. This is due to their access to steel in the northern mountains, as well as adopting Ravena’s approach of having good relationships with the ethnic groups living in those mountains, specifically dwarves.
The military of Hreinngar is one of the most battle-hardened warriors in the world. Being known as the ‘Ironmen’, most Hreinngarian Soldiers are expected to lift 35 kilograms of armor, at almost all times. A typical Hreinngarian soldier would be seen in full plate armor from head to toe, usually wielding a poleaxe or a halberd. They are also very strict, and will only move when given the orders. Massive pressure is thrown to those who cannot lift their own armor and equipment weight, and bullying is considered a justified act to those who do not want to wear the Hreinngarian Uniform.
Men who do not have experience in the military are often seen as weak, or ‘lady-like’ (Even though women often have a good amount of representation in the army). This prompts men to join the ranks to prove themselves, as well as developing really stoic or arrogant behaviors in the later stages of their adolescence.
A rise of mental health issues especially in the military is something that the government has been tackling for a long time. Some scholars argue that this is due to the Vindicumite Serum - a more stable serum formula that has almost similar effects, used by House Gunder during The Great Wall Conflict. Knowing that massive rises in Cortisol and Testosterone in the said serum would indicate the problem, military scholars in the SUV still debate about the source of this issue.
The Hreinngarian Royal Army is the prime protector of The Kingdom of Hreinngar. They are composed of one of the most disciplined and battle-hardened knights in all of Northern Selyria. Their experience in warfare makes them a prime choice for a lot of nobles to promote as their own personal bodyguards, or members of their elite guard units such as The Golden Eagle Guard and The White Knights Regiment.
The Hreinngarian Mage Order is the most comprehensive and notorious Mage Order in all of contemporary Selyria. They are known to be the most populous mage orders, and have often created massive feats in the Realm of Selyria. It is said that they are the prime reason why Hreinngar won the War of the Titans.
The Naerim City watch is the main civilian-based unit of Hreinngar that prioritizes taking care of internal security in the nation, such as city border patrol, traffic enforcement, and general policing.
The Hreinngarian Dragon Corps is the most famous unit in all of Hreinngar, as their Dragon Riders are seen as celebrities wherever they go in the region. Being a Dragon Rider in Hreinngar is seen as a massively respected profession, as dragons have always been the biggest asset that Hreinngar has ever employed to fight against their enemies.
A group of dogmatic and zealous knights whose loyalty lies with the church. Their tireless crusade of getting rid of ‘blasphemy’ within the lands of Selyria has made a powerful force to be feared within the lands. Their unwillingness to bow down to the Royal Family has given them a reputation of being a potential threat to the crown. However, this does not mean that they ally themselves with the other non-loyalist regiments. As seeing demons and other creatures is against their religion. To them, demons, tieflings, shapeshifters, or any ‘heretical’ creatures must be smited in the name of the High Priestess.
