Many historians claim that magic came from the Sau'lari Empire. However, recent evidence has suggested that magic may have already been practiced by a lot of northern tribes of Selyria, which leads to a theory that northern magic may have already been practiced before the Sau'lari Empire. Some historians also theorize that this primitive magic may have come from Duskalia, and through ice and land bridges, its influence must have went on to form what we now know as druids. This theory comes from recent findings regarding how Duskalian Druids seem to have the same political structure regarding how its people worship their Sanamancer leaders, and how their druids also live extremely long lives by the help of other malumancers. However, much more needs to be studied regarding this, especially with how some Historians debate that the northern druids may have instead been influenced by the Sau'lari Empire themselves.
The ancient Sau'lari God of magic and mystery, known as Akh Net, was known to be a trickster who cursed humanity with plagues and storms. This, according to SUV Historians, may be the reason why there is evidence that the Sau'lari Empire enslaved manaborn, and treated them as slave-soldiers to do their bidding. A theory has even come about that the word 'Arcane', comes from the the name of the god himself, but it is known that during this era, many mages fled the Sau'lari, which would be one of the reasons why the Sau'lari Druid theory may have been said.
During the conquest of the Genecian tribes, many of the tribes learned more about magic, as the Sau'lari Empire itself, used its mage slaves to fight the continent, but due to this, the tribes began to practice them, leading to what experts believe to be a massive genocide on the manaborn. When the Genecian tribes were conquered by the empire, many of the manaborn would be executed. Many experts believe this to be the reason why magical records would not be known, leaving a period of darkness for any manaborn to know how to work with magic.
Other theories however, take the 'Nullifier Theory' where the empire discovered nullifiers, but this theory does not hold a lot of evidence.
Experts currently call this early Sau'lari magic as 'Protomancy' or simply 'Arcana'. Some tales hint at Arcana's capabilities to resurrect the dead and give them a much longer life than usual. This, many experts believe, is what is currently the reason why there are mummies in southern Ibernus guarding the ruins of the former Yumbuwa Civilization.
1045-1000 BFS
During the years of the Centurion Wars, magic was rediscovered by a person who would be known as The Grandfather of Magic, and The First Sorcerer, known as Martinus Triventius. Martinus would be the first to specialize in Pyromancy, and use it to the best of its abilities. During his time, he would be treated as an incredibly high-status person, which likely contributed to his recovery.Â
More mages would then be discovered, and a race to find as many of them as possible would arrive. During these times, a famous mage, known as Sortiarus, would push himself towards his limit to try to show that he was much suited to a general's position instead of Martinus. This cost him his life, as he would suffer from 'Sortianus Morbius' (Sortiarus's illness) in which we now call 'Sorcerer's Syndrome'.
The death of Sortiarus changed the landscape of mages in Porthos. Recovery and discipline was now seen as a mandated practice, and more and more mages followed the 'Doctrina Imperialis', also known now as 'The Imperial System'.
While this happened, Martinus would be known as a threat to his enemies, and was one of the biggest reasons for Porthos's great expansion, where they even reached Sentora. Martinus's magical prowess is categorized as a powerful variant of the Imperial System, where basic spells are pushed to its highest limit. This meant that his small fireballs would explode much more powerful, spreading much more powerful heat. This may be too taxing to some, but experts can simply speculate on what this did to armies a 2 millennia ago.
722-675 BFS
After the death of Martinus Triventius, mages were further studied, and a culture of strictness became the norm. They were valued, and were seen as the pinnacle of discipline. This would change when another sorcerer named Lillith Avarisia was found as a manaborn in the forests of present-day Karthus.
When Lillith was taken from her tribe at 10 years old, she was abused, mistreated, and broken by Porthosian mageseekers, and was put into an institution to be obedient and subservient to the empire. She would follow suit, but she would also be known to grow up with a tendency to lash out and be extremely emotional.
She was extremely gifted, but she lacked discipline, leading her to be mediocre, and average at best. It did not take her long to learn spells, but she never mastered them. This would however, change when she started to join wine parties at 15, where she would learn to embrace what she called as her 'dark side'.
Lillith would then be known as the outcast sorcerer who studied in the morning, and partied every night. All indulgences were experimented by her, and she would rise the ranks as one of the most feared mages of her time. She soon gained a following, and a counter-culture to the Triventius way of doing magic. One of her students would then be known as one of the most powerful mages of all time, named Icasia. However, most people would know this student by the name 'Hiqash', or the Selyrian name 'Ekaj'.
675-320 BFS
When the Porthosian Empire assassinated Lillith, her student Icasia became the next in line as the teacher of her arts, also known as 'The Avarisian Doctrine', which would mold and change as time went by.
The mage community around this time split into two, creating what's known as the Imperial Mage War, or more commonly known as The First Mage War. With Icasia as its leader, mages who practiced the Triventian doctrine were harrassed, and sometimes even killed. During this time, Orealis was the center of this battle, leaving it as a very unstable mess. Citizens were often caught in the crossfire, and the empire had to intervene. Because of its connections, an effort was made to quell this brutal war within, and the empire took the side of the Triventians, and created a smeer campaign against the Avarisians, calling their practice as 'The Dark Arts'. While this lessened the amount of recorded Avarisians from practicing the magic publicly, it simply didn't fully stop them from growing.
500-320 BFS
While the Imperial Mage War was happening, magic also began to spread to the nearby Jian Empire (known today as the Xinjang Empire). While initially, the Jinyans followed the Porthosian ways of using magic as its raw power, the Jinyans were focused more on the physical aspects of magic. They discovered that affinity led to deterioration of the body. Because of this, they strived for what they viewed as 'inner balance' within the mind and body, which eventually led them to create what is now known as 'bending' or 'spellswording'.
Bending became so powerful that when the Jian Empire collapsed, the Xin Royal Family, which created the Xinjang Empire, would use these mages to conquer more of its neighbors and Kononagari. This would create many conflicts, and would force Kononagari to rethink its strategies in war, and soon, forge their own mages to battle the different empires.
22-1 BFS
During the rise of a very powerful mage named Ilicia, who was believed to be the vessel of the Solevist god "Solev" himself, many people followed her ways, and proceeded to fight against the forces of Ekaj, who at the time, was generating a massive cult following.
Ilicia became known by the title "The High Priestess", and she continued to preach and gain more mage followers to her side. While she grew, the Porthosian government may have seen this as a threat to their authority, and it may have been the reason for her arrest, and eventual crucifixion.
The death of Ilicia sparked massive outcry, and furthered the divide of Porthosian Society. This, partnered with many natural disasters, famines, and external threats, would be what historians agree to be the decline of the Porthosian Empire, and with it, its magic. The Porthosian government would soon try to persecute all mages, but this would simply be too late, as most mages during this time, fled north, or towards the Arkasian coastline.
1 BFS - 212 FS
The fall of the Porthosian Empire was also known to be the fall of Selyrian magic at the time. The First Sun became a great contributor to this, as most mages fled the crumbled empire, and went north, but this was also due to Icasia's reign of terror in the empire. This became a period of very hard rebuilding, and it was an era of a fractured Porthos.
The High Priestess ressurected after a year of the First Sun, but she left the empire, along with her mage followers.
In the north however, magic was still practiced, but it was heavily guarded by the druids, and other elements were often prohibited. This resulted in the slow death of any magical practice by common people, leaving its arts in extremely small pockets.

It is said that the Ellington family were descended from Icasia, or Ekaj, or were descendants of Ilicia. This heavily depends on the source of the stories, but the narrative is known to be that Vulcan Ellington was a close follower of the Triventian technique of pyromancy, but he was not as physically capable as his peers. After hearing that druids could alter the bodies of people, he set out a journey to do this. However, he would change and instead, started to follow the techniques that the druids would do when doing magic. By studying the meditations of the druids, he soon quickly focused his magical prowess while also meditating, shifting his mind's focus to empower his spells. This resulted in him being known as the most powerful pyromancer in the north, eventually earning him the title of "The Father of Selyrian Magic", and "The Father of Western Style".
It is said that during his time, more and more students began to follow his work and techniques, and soon, mages in Selyria began to be associated with a thin body structure. This became much more prominent when Ekaj arrived to duel him, and Vulcan let out a "tsunami of fire" to make the dark master retreat to the present-day Ekajian Isles.
Due to this, most Selyrian mages, especially those in the Reedianite faith, believe that Western Style is the most powerful style of all.

While Porthos suffered a magical decline in the west, Shiniya became a massive hotbed of magic-infused martial arts, using tools to gather evidence. Torches became containers of sources, and many warriors infused these tools with blades or handles, giving them a dual purpose. Kononagarian war fans would also be used by the first windwalkers, although the practice would decline following the 2nd century.
Kononagari was the Shiniyan nation that specialized in the wind, as they thought that it was the most abundant of all. This was extremely effective, as fireballs were often parried in the air by these aeromancers, while waiting until the Jianese, and would later be the Xin'jangese mages, would run out of mana. Soon, Kononagari began creating multiple dojos for such practice, which would later be known as the martial art of Kononagarian Windwalking.
Windwalking is considered a staple of Kononagarian martial arts. It uses the wind to guide the weapons of its user, making the person strike and move faster. By using the wind, the user becomes unpredictable, agile, and free-flowing, with some even going so fast that some warriors could not keep track of them.
This was extremely popular during the war between Xin'jang and Kononagari, but it declined after the war due to the lack of demand when it comes to warriors. While most of the samurai began to live a life of luxury or retirement after the war, the windwalkers could not find a job, as their dedication to their craft made them not as physically incapable as most people. While some others would be very popular, such as Kimiko Hajiwari, who was known to be one of the best windwalkers ever, most windwalkers could not keep up with the competition, and soon turned into a life of banditry. Soon, being a windwalker became associated with being a vagabond.
Today, there are still windwalkers, but it is often done by being a mercenary.

It is said that when Vulcan Ellington grew old, Ekaj sent his followers to attack him. When they failed to return as he waited for a month, he then went to Kononagari to find the windwalkers that he had heard. He gave these windwalkers a purpose in life, and soon began the formation of the Ekajian Reapers.
According to some estimates, hundreds of reapers were said to have followed Ekaj in fighting against Vulcan Ellington. Conservative estimates speculate that it reached around 50 reapers, while others have suggested 220-300. Eitherway, the famous tale states that only 10 of the original reapers returned, as Vulcan Ellington would finally be killed. Vulcan Ellington would leave a legacy of being a very influential mage, creating a 1st draft of the Mage Council Document, that we use till this day.
Before his death, Vulcan started a small school that taught pyromancy in present day Hreinngar. To this day, it still stands as the Ellington Memorial Academy of the Sun Arts, which would eventually become the best pyromancy school in the world.
293 - 307
With Vulcan Ellington's death, Ekaj was believed to have sought out The High Priestess to take control of the empire of Porthos.
Around 285 FS, a Porthosian Mage named Kycelius the Wise, created a system of magic that was similar in nature to the Vulcan System, but it used spells. This helped most mages fend off against Ekaj's followers.
The Porthosian Reedianite scholars eventually told him that the High Priestess was already in Sentora. Around 293 FS, Ekaj tried to conquer The Kingdom of Ilicia (found in Present-day Sentora) and fought hard. He was also reported to have awakened the golems of the Parasidas mountains, where it would be discovered that he could not only do magic with pyromancy, but he could also do basic Sanamancy. Because of this, the dark forces killed an estimated 66% of the kingdom's population, soon however, this would change.
According to the holy scriptures, Ekaj was met with a beam of light that was so powerful, that it destroyed the biggest mountain in the Parasidas mountain range. This, according to most historians, is the only record of Stellar Pyromancy to ever exist. This is also what historians believe to be the moment when Ekaj left and returned to The Ekajian Isles. An agreement may or may not have been made by the two aspects, and this would continue on to this day.
Afraid of another round of golems awakening, The Grandmasters of Selyria, Caedia, and Duskalia at the time created what would be known as The Ogroid Highlands. While the bottom of it is a natural mountain range, several stones atop of it were put to prevent golems from escaping it.
After the 2nd Mage War, an estimation of 40% of the known world's population was gone, and many reforms were followed to prevent another catastrophe from happening.
311
When news of the 2nd Mage War's aftermath were heard by Kycelius's allies, he was immediately notified, and was met with the reality that if too much magic in the hands of an individual have the potential to destroy mountains, and maybe even continents, then it ought to be their mission to convince the best mages in the world to create a council that enacted laws, rules, and regulations to how magic should be used in the world. Because of this, the first mage council would be formed in Hreinngar's Naerem, and this would evolve into systems of practice, technique, and many restrictions. Porthos and Karthus would follow suit, then Ravena, until the entirety of Selyria would have some kind of Mage regulatory committee that is still present till this day. Soon, nations outside of Selyria would follow, bringing forth the creation of The World Mage Council. Rectors acted as teachers, and the first Venators would be created, killing anyone who dared challenge the aspects.
312-1391
Once the mage councils would finally form, different practices would soon be discovered. Ibernian governments would officially lift the mage ban, and would soon develop and discover the element of sand, and the practice of Aremancy would be done, which would soon evolve to the discovery of Geomancy, or the manipulation of rock and stone.
Dwarves of the Arcane North would also discover a way to metallize and crystalize rocks, creating the practice of Ferromancy and Kosmimancy respectively. Elite Ferromancers would use this to essentially produce the Selyrian Currency.
The Arcane North would lead developments in Sanamancy, Pyromancy, and Aeromancy. Sanamancy would be discovered to be able to manipulate Flesh, Blood, and Bone (Malumancy), and being able to raise and control the dead (Necromancy). For Pyromancy, the first Electromancer, named "Maris Jarla" would use his power to fight the Trostians.
All of these developments led to the era that we know today, known as The Selyrian Era, where mages are the most powerful individuals in the world right now.
1392 - 1399
With the advent of mage academies, there was a huge increase of mages in the world. This created multiple wars and even internal conflicts, especially since most grandmasters limited the amount of knowledge mages had, less deaths through sorcerer's syndrome occurred, which meant there were more mages than ever before.
Once the Dwarven Mages of Ulfenheim found a way to magically mine copper, silver, and gold, Selyria experienced a period of global economic downturn known as "The Mountain Plague" where the value of gold dropped dramatically, causing nations to create drastic matters, and with some, even resulting in wars.
This war, while it costed less lives than the second, resulted in much more geographical and structural damage. This would lead to the creation of The Selyrian League, which in 1445, would be renamed into The Council of Sovereign Nations, to work along with The World Mage Council in preventing wars and preserving world peace.
Venators became much more structured with the World Mage Council taking control of them, instead of nations - which became much more organized and less biased. Malumancy became a banned practice, and the Dark Arts would have official lists of spells according to The Naerem Convention.
Worldbuilder's Note
During Vontur's rebellion, Nullifier crystals would be discovered, and would eventually be used around 1200 FS.
Around 1327, strange crystals were found in mountains and underground areas in Hreinngar. They would soon be used to store elements, creating an expansion to many uses, such as with Agriculture, transportation, and especially, warfare. These became known as the Manite Orbs.
Nullifier Crystals and Manite Orbs became popular during the 3rd Mage War. To this day, there is tension between the anti-magic side of Vontur, and The mage-centric side of Hreinngar.
