Wyverns are vicious, feral draconians that lack breath weaponry but make up for it with their ferocity and venom. They are physically weaker and smaller than dragons. However, they are far more numerous, to the point where they are nuisances to many Sely
rians. The same cannot be said with Caedians and giants however, as they are a fine source of companions, and food for giants. Most commonly found in Caedia, they are trained as ferocious but loyal flying mounts for their warfare, engineering, transportation, and clothing.
To many, especially to Selyrians, the wyvern is an uncommon, but rare, annoying pest. While native to the continent of Wyvernus, they have found a way to cross the Sea of Wyverns, having some habitats near Porthos and Northern Selyria. Measuring 3.5 to 11.5 meters in length, and with wingspans ranging from 5.5 to 20 meters, wyverns are one of the apex predators of the southern coastal regions. Their scales are noticeably weaker than proper dragons, albeit are still very resilient. Lacking 4 proper feet of a normal dragon, they instead possess 2 legs and a set of wings with claws that can allow for leg usage.
Male Wyverns do not usually have spikes, yet they possess venom. Females on the other hand, have more spikes, and would even have ones on their tails. Males often have very striking patterns depending on the species, while females have more bland patterns. Young wyverns usually have a bluish, or black color when they are not fully mature, then shed their skin afterwards when they grow to be fully mature wyverns.
While wyverns are used as a food source by giants, the Kingdom of Caedia is known for its abundance of wyverns, and trains them to be mountable. They are often sterilized during the process of training to not contribute to the overpopulation of the species as well as making sure they have a monopoly on the wyvern market, and then shipped into the ports of Vontur, in which they are shipped out at exorbitant prices to other kingdoms. Currently, there are 3 species of wyverns that roam the lands of Selyria and Caedia.
By its name, the Porthosian Green Wyvern is usually found mainly in the Kingdom of Porthos, with some parts scattered around Southern Selyria. They have a distinct green color unlike their Caedian counterparts. Their behaviour is also seen as the most aggressive among the wyvern species, and are not likely to be tamed for any use. Porthosians usually capture and kill these beasts for sport, or to be traded with the Northern Giants as food.
Their diet mostly consists of fish, although they can sometimes be seen feeding off of livestock such as cows, sheep, goats, buffalos, and other domesticated meat. They are sometimes even known to target sentient populations. One of their most signature traits is how they do not hesitate in using their venom to kill their prey. Although their venom is not as powerful as snakes, it is usually more of a weakening mechanism so that their prey becomes too tired to move. They cannot be mounted, as they are not as strong as their Caedian counterparts, and they are highly aggressive when they mature. So it is mostly useless to tame them.
Porthosian Wyverns could grow up to 3.5 to 3.7 meters in length, have long green scales, and some hints of feathers on their tail and back primarily used for mating display and rituals.
The Caedian Red Wyvern is the second biggest recorded wyvern species in the known world reaching heights of up to 6 meters in length and 3 meters in height. It is also commonly mistaken as a dragon for some people. This is due to their draconic features being more present, as well as their size. Caedian Wyverns however, despite their size and intimidating appearance, can be tamed. But taming such beasts requires proper time and dedication. They are also known as ‘Common Wyverns’.
Caedian Wyverns usually patrol the shores of Northern Wyvernus, and are often seen looking for fish in the Sea of Wyverns, as well as roaming the lands of Wyvernus to hunt cattle, and other mammals.
A subspecies of the Caedian Red Wyvern, is the Caedian Brown Wyvern. An evolutionary study points to the change of skin color due to more exposure to the hot sun of the Wyvernian desert. Because of this, scientists have mistaken Brown Caedian Wyverns to be a separate species of Wyvern. But through continuous studies in behaviour and pattern observation, they’re now considered to be more of a different breed of the original Caedian Red Wyvern.
The Northern White Wyvern is by far the biggest type of wyvern in the known world. They are also extremely rare, and are almost extinct due to overhunting by the population of Trost. Northern White Wyverns can grow up to 11.5 meters in length, and with a height of 4 meters. Recent documents have shown that they sometimes use their skin to burrow under the snow, then pounce on their prey once they are close enough. This is in complete contrast to the other wyvern species.
Sadly, these Wyverns are extremely rare nowadays, and only the most daring can see them on the summits of mountains, and the coldest of regions in Northern Selyria. Their diet consists of Trostian Mammoths and similar large mammals.
A wyvern is feral by nature, and while it can be tamed, the process is generally hard to perform. Taming can really only be possible at an early age, otherwise, there is no time to adapt. To wild wyverns however, they are usually hunted down or live in relative groups in the mountainous regions of Selyria. Their behavioral patterns are similar to wolves. In saying this, most Wyverns live in tightly knit groups. A group of wyverns are called a ‘flock’. And wild flocks may be dangerous for small villages. Caedian reports show that a flock may target a village as they host a variety of meat for food. Flocks are also called ‘terrors’ by some Caedian and Porthosian locals.
They often live near mountainous communities, often terrorizing locals and eating livestock. Giants will often live in these mountain tops and breed said wyverns for a food source, and their mindsets differ depending on each colony. Wyverns reproduce noticeably faster than proper dragons due to their much more animalistic traits, however do not take up as much biomass as a proper dragon, allowing them to often flourish.
The lifespan of a wyvern usually spans 50 years at most, but a drake is functionally immune to aging. The first part of a wyverns lifespan would be it hatching from its egg, usually laid in quantities of 3-6 eggs, however most of the time only 2 or so of these hatchlings survive, usually due to them eating eachother. Wyverns will learn to fly by 5 years old, and at that point will venture from its nest for the rest of its life. For the first 10 years of its life, a young wyvern is deemed fit to be tamed and transported, after that cut off date they are considered too much of a hassle and are killed. After they are captured, they are trained for a span of 2 years to adapt to a human rider, and in the process sterilized, and after that are usually shipped off. The kingdom best known for this is Caedia, in which they ship their wyverns off into the ports of Vontur.
A wyverns method of hunting relies solely on swooping down and snatching up prey, and usually eats it from there, not much else needs to be said.
To hunt a wyvern is a hard task, that is if you’re a small grunt like a human, so I’ll only tell you about how to hunt them like a human. A bow is often required, usually a great bow, . Without it the wyvern will get up and swoop down at your sorry head. A large arrowhead will sink deep within it and explode outward, causing a large gaping wound and almost instead bleeding to death. This is best performed on the arm piece of the wing, as it will mostly sever it and tear it off, causing them to bleed out, and you’ll generally want the main body and head intact. Another option, especially for close range, is to use a long spear. Doing this requires a group, for hunting solely is a death sentence. One person usually becomes the main target of the wyvern, preferably a very strong person, who stabs the wyvern head on, while the rest of the spearmen must quickly stab the neck from the sides as soon as possible during the engagement. If this takes too long, and the main spearman is exhausted, it is best to run away and look for cover, otherwise, the wyvern will call for its flock.
The meat from the body is able to feed you for a good amount of time, but carrying over the hide will usually take a wagon. Said hide is worth a fortune due to the scales' natural resistance, and are often harvested off of the body. Cooking wyvern meat should be treated very well, but it’s usually best to sell to a butcher since wyvern meat is a delicacy.
That is what has to be said about these creatures, and I don’t want to bore you about how a giant eats them for common food, but I hope this helps on your adventures. Now get lost, human!
Caedian tradition when it comes to taming wyverns is incredibly interesting, and is mostly a spectacle to watch. It is also a good case study to the behaviors of such beasts.
Taming a wyvern is usually done soon after they are born. Eggs are put in special incubators that lay there for 6 to 8 months. After hatching, the newly born hatchlings are taken to a public observation zone where they are visually exposed to humans. This makes them more familiar with them. In Caedia’s case, public cages can be seen in public markets, temples, barracks, and zoos. Several captors hand over small fish during their early ages, but the more they grow, the more they are able to eat bigger fish. When they are about 1 meter tall, they are fully domesticated and docile.
This then moves on to the next step, in which they teach them how to fly. Usually, a trainer goes in to confront these wyverns with a mature wyvern to guide them. The trainer gives food for a couple of days to make the juveniles more familiar with the trainer. The food becomes more limited as the days go by, and its serving is put on higher and higher ground. After these days of serving, the trainer then flies off on his wyvern into a very high platform to encourage the young wyverns to jump and use their wings to traverse. Some wyverns will die as a result of this process, but the ones who can fly are often the ones who pass into the stables of Caedia to then be castrated and sold for mounts as well as further training in flight maneuvers and such.
Tamed wyverns, depending on their age, can be incredibly loyal to their masters. Caedian hunters and travelers may sometimes be found having 1 Red Wyvern as a mount, and they would be able to traverse such long distances without the use of any other resources. Because of this, Caedian Merchants are incredibly rich. Similar nations also utilize the use of Caedian Wyverns, but because of the high price of these beasts, and how they are made to be infertile.
