Rice Excited about Improvements (January 2024)
By Morgan Galilei
The Pirate boys’ basketball team was looking to improve upon last season’s 8-15 record, and they appear to have done so. They started the season with four straight wins, outscoring their opponents by an average score of 74-39. They are currently tied for first in the Know-Morrow Athletic Conference with a 3-0 league mark, and an overall record of 6-2. This has head coach, Jason Rice, excited about the obvious improvements.
How do you feel about the first few wins?
I’m very excited about the wins and I hope to continue the streak.
What is your coaching style?
Get up defensively, ball pressure hard, offensively run, and get out and be aggressive.
How long have you been a coach?
This is my second year being head coach. I've been coaching since I was 23. I've been at the national level traveling around the country. I spent three years at Shelby and five years at Lexington.
Have you changed your coaching style?
So, we wanted to be able to run faster last year but we weren't ready to. Everything we have been building to is to be able to run up and down the court offensively and defensively.

Strickland Leads Wrestlers and Lauds Wrestling (November 2023)
By Dylan Compton
Mr. Austin Strickland is back for his second season as the head wrestling coach. He is also an assistant coach with the varsity football team. He recently shared his thoughts about the upcoming wrestling season, and about the sport of wrestling, in general.
What does a normal practice look like?
We start with a basic running warm up around that mats that includes catch up talking, music and throwing the football. That leads us in lines for active stretching and then circling up for stagnate stretching. We then proceed to instruct a new set of moves with Coach Mike and Lil Strick helping walk us through them before ending with some conditioning and a break out.
Cardington’s wrestling programs seem to be exploding in popularity. Do you see that?
Right now it’s preseason but we are hoping and looking forward to the biggest team this year since the 2012 MOAC championship team.
What are your team goals for this season.
As a Coaching staff and team we hope for continued improvement in wins and numbers from last year, looking to compete for the KMAC and sending multiple kids to district and state!
You talk a lot about expectations versus goals. What are your expectations?
My expectations for the season are that we insert the next brick into the housing foundation of the wrestling program, and to help attract new faces to come join our family and capture the KMAC and more.
Is there anyone in particular that you are most looking forward to seeing wrestle?
As a coach I am looking forward to the returning letter winners wrestle this year and seeing how much they have grown and learned to stack up wins as well as a very promising freshman class, including two 2-time conference champions Carter Sherman and Dylan Compton.
Why should our students consider wrestling?
There’s tons of reasons to wrestle! To start it can help you in any other sport you do in the fall or spring! Along with help prepare you for life after high school teaching you self accountability and leadership qualities needed to be successful. Finally, the family bond that comes with this team, ask anyone who has been part of the team the bonding and relationships you will build through it are like no other sport in my eyes.

Wrestlers Show Well in Sectionals, and Beyond March 10, 2023
STAFF REPORTS – Sophomore Cameron Sherman finished 4th in the OHSAA Girls’ Wrestling regional tournament on March 5 at Olentangy Orange High School. This qualifies her for the state tournament on March 10-12 in Value City Arena at The Ohio State University.
The Pirate boys performed well in the post-season, as well. Freshman Wyatt Denney placed 2nd in the sectional tournament, competing at 165 pounds, earning him a spot in the district tournament on March 3-4. After a 1st-round victory by a pin, Denney lost his quarterfinal and second consolation rounds. Still, for his efforts, he was named to the all-KMAC 2nd team.
Freshman Brandon Hughes placed 6th in the sectional tournament at 113 pounds, while junior Austin Vails finished 5th at 138 pounds.
Bowlers Earn Multiple League Honors March 10, 2023

STAFF REPORTS – Junior Dylan Keifer captured the individual championship, leading the boys’ bowling team to the Knox-Morrow Athletic Conference team championship on February 11 at Victory Lanes in Galion.
It was a close contest. The Pirates finished with a team score of 3571, just 37 pins ahead of 2nd-place Northmor. Keifer’s three-game total of 581 led the way. Junior Andrew Weber’s 517 was good for 12th place, junior Zane Everly finished 15th with a 490, and senior Silas Horton took 18th with a 479.
The tournament championship was an upset, of sorts, as the Pirates finished league play in 4th place in the KMAC with an 8-6 record behind champion East Knox, Fredericktown, and Mount Gilead.
The girls’ team was also champions this season, finishing tied for first in the KMAC with Fredericktown with identical 11-3 records. The team finished third in the KMAC tournament with a team score of 2930, behind champion Northmor and East Knox. Senior Payton Goodman led the Pirates with her three-game total of 477.

Wrestling Competes at Harding Classic January 13, 2023
By Jeff Jackson - On December 28 and 29, The Pirates’ wrestling team competed in a very tough field at the 51st Annual Marion Harding Classic over the winter break. The ten varsity starters represented the largest team from Cardington to compete in this meet in the past ten years.
This year’s team is young and inexperienced, but they held their own in the 35-team field that included schools representing all three divisions of OHSAA wrestling. Despite their youth, head coach, Austin Strickland, is highly optimistic.
“I think it looks like we might finish top three in (the KMAC) tournament instead of in the middle since our numbers are greater,” he said.
Nearly every starter earned a win at the Harding Classic. Sophomore Cody Redmon and freshman Wyatt Denney advanced to the semifinals of their respective weight classes. While neither made it to the podium, opponents are taking notice of the great strides that the team has taken leading up to next month’s KMAC tournament at Northmor.
“Each tournament we go to, we notice, as a staff, our wrestlers are performing new moves and counters we taught and are seeing jumps and win totals as a team from meet to meet,” Strickland added.

Strickland Offers Thoughts on Boys Basketball December 9, 2022
By Jeff Jackson – Coach Austin Strickland runs the wrestling program at Cardington High School, but he recently shared a few thoughts and predictions about the 2022-2023 boys’ basketball Pirates.
With our 2-2 start to the season, what do you think the outlook for the season is?
“It gives you a good start with our non-conference games and hopefully it will propel us to an even better start with the conference games.”
Have you attended any of the home games and if so, what do you think we need to improve on?
“Yes, I attended the Delaware Christian and Elgin games. The biggest things I noticed are that we need to improve on boxing out and grabbing rebounds and knowing when to slow the ball down and push the tempo.”
How do you feel the outlook of the team looks this year compared to last year?
“I think we’re going to be better because our primary ball handlers are on their second year of managing the team, our shooters are more adapted to the pressure of the defense, and as a team, they understand the flow of a high school basketball game.”
What are our biggest strengths as a team?
“I think our strengths are our speed and great wing defenders which will enable us to control the tempo of each game.”

Bowling Preview – Rolling into a New Season November 22, 2022
The 2022-2023 bowling season is underway. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams have some high expectations for this year.
The girls’ team has experience on its side with six seniors on the roster. Maleigha Holtrey, Alexis Crone, Jillian West-Johnston, and Sage Whetnall return from last year’s 9-4, district qualifying squad. Senior Abby Raber also joins the team.
But, the most significant returning bowler is senior Payton Goodman. Payton qualified for the state tournament, finishing 6th, earning her 2nd-team All-state honors.
“Last year was a really good season for me,” she said. “I won KMAC for the girls and placed second in Districts which advanced me to the state tournament.”
Her goals for this season are to improve as much as possible.
“This year my season goal is to try and push myself to be in the top 5,” she added.
Still, the entire team looks forward to the new season and the new challenges.
Holt and junior Autumn Holt offered that they are “excited for the season to watch everyone improve and adapt to this year.”
The boys’ team will rely on senior Silas Horton to anchor the team, which also qualified for the District tournament last season. Horton is the returning KMAC ‘Bowler of the Year.’
Both teams are coached by Mrs. Adams, who was promoted from Assistant Coach last year.
Lady Pirates Even after Two Games November 22, 2022
STAFF REPORTS – The girls’ basketball team opened the 2022-2023 season with a pair of games last weekend, winning one of two.
Friday night, the Lady Pirates hosted North Union. The Wildcats were one of the stronger teams in the Central District last season, finishing at 20-3. They continued their winning ways with a 47-32 victory.
Junior Lydia Hess led the Pirates with 10 points, with senior Samantha Spires close behind with nine of her own. Sophomore Madison Caulkins controlled the glass, pulling down eight rebounds, including seven at the defensive end.
Saturday night went much better with the Pirates earning a 45-11 win at Ridgedale. Senior Madison Linkous had the hot hand with 19 points on 7-14 shooting, including five from 3-point range. Linkous also led the team in rebounds with six. Sophomore Abby Hardwick added eight points.
The Lady Pirates return to action tonight, hosting Loudonville before hitting the road again on November 30 to face Fredericktown. Both games tip off at 7:30 P.M.

Volleyball Team Repeats as District Champs; Falls in Regional November 11, 2022
By Liz Ramey - The varsity volleyball team repeated at the OHSAA Central District Division 3 champions after their 3-1 win over Marion Pleasant on October 29. With the win, Lady Pirates earned a matchup with the Versailles Tigers in a regional semifinal at Kettering Fairmont High School on November 3.
Unfortunately, the season ended then as the Pirates fell to the Tigers, 3-0. Serve receiving seemed to be an issue, with Head Coach, Ryan Treese, lamenting that “we didn’t serve well enough to get them out of our system.”
Versailles controlled the first two sets, winning 25-13 and 25-16. The Pirates fought hard in the third set, but ultimately fell, 25-21.
Senior Audrey Brininger led the way with 11 kills and seven digs, while senior Izzy Wickline added two blocks. Senior Cadie Long chipped in 14 blocks, and senior Jadine Mills contributed 26 assists.
Though the loss ended the season, the District title was one of many accomplishments, both for the team and the individual players.
“They played really good at times during the season,” Coach Treese said.
To go along with their 22-4 overall record, the Pirates were a perfect 12-0 in Knox-Morrow Athletic Conference action and repeated as league champions. The junior varsity team were successful, as well, earning a KMAC co-championship.
Individual honors for the senior class came along with the team’s success on the court:
Audrey Brininger – KMAC Player of the Year, Central District Player of the Year, 1st team All-Ohio
Jadine Mills – 1st team All-KMAC, 1st Team All Central District
Cadie Long – 1st team All-KMAC, 1st Team All Central District
Izzy Wickline – 2nd Team All-KMAC, Central District Honorable Mention
Madison Linkous – 2nd Team All-KMAC
Payton Goodman – 2nd Team All-KMAC
Alexis Crone – KMAC All-Academic
Coach Ryan Treese – KMAC Coach of the Year
Multiple school records were accomplished this season, as well. Brininger ends her career with 1306 kills, also becoming the first player to reach the 1000. Mills finished the season with 935 assists, a single-season program record.
Wickline reached the 300-mark in blocks for her career, finishing with 302. Long finished with 1602 digs for her career in her 315 sets played.
Goodman, Linkous and Crone round out the outstanding senior class.
Hallbrins Run at State Meet November 11, 2022
Staff Reports - Sophomore Magi Hallabrin and senior Loey Hallabrin qualified for the OHSAA state championships in Cross Country. Their top-20 performances at the regional qualifying run earned them the trip to The Fortress in Obetz for the final meet.
On October 29, the two ran in the OHSAA Region 11 championships at Pickerington High School. Magi finished 8th out of 154 runners with a time of 19:50.93. Loey was close behind in 13th with her mark of 20:04.44.
The following weekend, on November 5, the pair competed with 180 other runners in the state championships. Magi finished with a time of 21:12.6, good for 97th out of the 182 competitors. Loey followed wither her time of 23:03.0, earning her 162nd place.
The Dawn of a New Era - Girls Basketball Preview November 11, 2022
By Lydia Hess - The girls’ varsity basketball team has a new head coach this season, but he is hardly a stranger to the team. Kevin Fitzpatrick takes over the program, having served as an assistant to departing head coach Jamie Edwards for the past seven years.
In addition to a new coach, the Pirates have several key graduation losses from last year’s 17-4 district semifinalist team. That team also repeated as KMAC champions. Perhaps, the biggest loss is KMAC Player of the Year, Beth Hardwick.
This year’s squad returns no seniors and only three letter winners from last year’s roster – sophomores Abigail Hardwick and Madison Caulkins, and junior Lydia Hess. This will force the new members of the roster to step up and contribute.
“My main mindset going into this season is to play hard, have fun, and work on things that I need to work on,” said sophomore Kinstin Henthorn.
Knowing that a negative mindset can produce a negative outcome, and vice versa, the young players are making the most of their opportunities to earn varsity minutes.
Freshman Hailey Littlemyer said, “The biggest change this season so far has been my teammate's and I’s dedication and desire to improve in basketball. I am really excited to be competing at a higher level of basketball.”
The Lady Pirates open the 2022-2023 season on Friday, November 18, hosting North Union.
Pirates Fall to Indians in Football Finale October 28, 2022
The game started well for the Pirates as senior Kaiden Beach connected with sophomore Kalin Briggs for a 47-yard touchdown pass. Sophomore Austin Vails’ PAT gave the visitors the 7-0 lead. A fumble recovery on the Indians’ 30-yard line had the Pirates ready to add to that lead.
They thought they had done so. Beach had a touchdown run nullified by a holding penalty, forcing an eventual field goal attempt, which the Indians blocked. Mount Gilead added a touchdown before the end of the quarter, but a failed PAT allowed Cardington to maintain a 7-6 lead.
The Indians would take over the game at this point. A 24-point second quarter gave them the 30-7 halftime lead.
Beach was able to score to open the third quarter. But these would be the final points of the evening for Cardington. The Indians added 14 more to account for the final score.
Beach led the way offensively, completing 8 of 17 passes for one touchdown. He also led the rushing attack with 141 yards on 18 carries. Briggs finished with three receptions for 37 yards and one touchdown. As he has done all season, senior Colin McAvoy led the defense with ten tackles, including one tackle for a loss.
The Pirates end the season with a 1-9 record, including 0-7 in the KMAC.

Senior Audrey Brininger led the way with 19 kills. Senior Cadie Long had 30 digs and was perfect on her serve reception for the match.
The team followed their title-winning game with four more wins, taking down both Bucyrus Winford and Westfall, both 3-0 results, at the Cardington Tri on October 8. The Lady Pirates were not finished, yet, as they continued with another 3-0 win over Wynford on October 10, and a 3-0 Senior Night win over Mount Gilead on October 11.

“The girls aren’t done yet, though,” Treese added. The team has its sights set on a deep tournament run.

Football Pirates Fall to Blue Devils and Redbirds October 14, 2022
STAFF REPORTS - The Cardington Pirates football team dropped two recent games, falling to Danville, 28-20, and to Loudonville, 42-12.
Danville spoiled the Pirates' homecoming game on September 30. The Blue Devils jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead before the Pirates began to get on track.
Senior quarterback Kaiden Beach opened the scoring for the Pirates with an 8-yard run for the game’s only points in the second quarter. Danville led, 14-6, at halftime.
After the Blue Devils increased the lead to 21-6 in the third quarter, senior Ashton Plowman answered with a 7-yard touchdown run. Danville maintained a 21-12 lead after three quarters.
Freshman Wyatt Denney struck next with a 48-yard sprint with 8:38 remaining. Denney also ran for the 2-point conversion, bringing the Pirates to within one.
The Blue Devils responded immediately with a touchdown with 6:14 remaining. The successful PAT accounted for the final scoring, 28-20 to Danville.
Denney led the rushing attack with 87 yards on ten carries. Sophomore Warren Garrison led the passing game with 75 yards completing three of four attempts. Senior Kaiden Beach also threw well, completing six of seven for 53 yards. Sophomore Kaylin Briggs hauled in five of those passes for 86 yards. Senior Colin McAvoy anchored the defense with eleven tackles, including three tackles-for-loss.
The October 7 date with Loudonville was not as close, as the Redbirds left town with a 41-12 victory. Loudonville scored most of their points by the 8:20 mark of the third quarter. Ayden Plowman opened the Pirates’ scoring with a 6-yard run with 3:16 remaining in the quarter. The 2-point conversion run attempt failed.
After the Blue Devils added a field goal late in the final quarter, Ashton Plowman found the end zone with 1:29 remaining on a 9-yard run. Again, the 2-point conversion run attempt failed to account for the final score.
Ashton Plowman led the ground attack with 65 yards on just three carries. Brother Ayden added 61 yards on 14 attempts. Beach completed five of nine passes for 64 yards. Briggs caught two of the passes for 27 yards.
McAvoy added another ten tackles to his KMAC-leading total, including three tackles-for-loss. His season total now stands at 90. Journey Williamson added an interception.

Volleyball Looks to Clinch KMAC Title September 30, 2022
By Taitym Byrne – The varsity volleyball team is closing in on their second consecutive Knox-Morrow Athletic Conference championship. With three matches remaining, the Pirates have an 9-0 league record to go with an overall record of 14-3.
The Lady Pirates won the Central District championship last season, raising the expectations that Head Coach Ryan Treese has for the rest of this season.
“The season is going well. We are playing to about 85% of our ability,” he said. “If 9-0 is 85%, then we can’t wait ‘til they play 100%.”
One reason for the team’s success this season is that the Lady Pirates have players who lead the KMAC in four of six statistical categories. Senior Audrey Brininger leads the league with 242 kills, while senior Jadine Mills leads in assists with 570. Senior Cadie Long holds the top spot in digs with 278.
The Lady Pirates also fill the top three spots in hitting percentage with senior Izzy Wickline leading the way with a .457 rate. Brininger follows with .355 and senior Alexis Crone is close behind at .324.
Wickline is also second in the KMAC in blocks with 47, while Mills and Long are third and fourth in aces with 37 and 35, respectively.
Coach Treese has set some goals higher than second consecutive league and District titles.
“We have a shot to get to the final four if we play to our level and not the level of the competition.”
The Lady Pirates' next match is at East Knox on October 4. The first serve is set for 7:00 P.M.
Football Team Working to Compete in Tough KMAC September 30, 2022
Staff Reports - The Cardington Pirates varsity football team has struggled to find the win column so far this season, but Head Coach Ryan Goetzman has seen several things that allow him to remain optimistic.
“We continue to practice hard, and the intensity and good attitude are still there,” he said.
The team has one win through six games, a 49-0 non-league win over Crestline on September 2. Through these six games, Colin McAvoy leads the Knox-Morrow Athletic Conference with 69 tackles, including three tackles-for-loss. Senior quarterback, Kaiden Beach, is sixth in passing with 546 yards and four touchdowns.
The Pirates welcome the Danville Blue Devils tonight for the annual Homecoming game.
