Here at the Reading House... your child will receive personalized instruction using a multimodal structured literacy model. Students struggling with learning how to read and students diagnosed with dyslexia benefit from structured literacy in the areas of reading, writing, and spelling. The tutoring sessions I deliver can support students (ages 5-18) who are already receiving dyslexia services in school or students who may just need additional practice.
What are my qualifications? Since receiving my Master's degree in Elementary Education, I have spent 12 years teaching students to read, write, and spell as a teacher in public and private schools. I have extensive training in the Orton- Gillingham method and I am certified in several dyslexia programs such as Reading by Design and Reading Readiness. Learn more about me
What is Orton- Gillingham? Orton- Gillingham is a systematic, diagnostic, and prescriptive approach to teaching reading, writing, and spelling. Being diagnostic and prescriptive allows me to tailor lessons specific to your child's needs. The reading and spelling lessons are introduced in a highly structured, engaging way that allows students to use their visual, tactile, and auditory senses to solidify the skills being taught. Here are a few links to give you more information about Orton- Gillingham: Orton- Gillingham Method
What does a tutoring session look like? Each tutoring session is 1:1, for 45 minutes, 2 to 3 times per week in my home office. I love for parents to sit in the living room where they can hear our tutoring session. In each tutoring session, we will review previously learned skills and introduce a new concept through multisensory activities that allow for reading, spelling, and writing practice. It's important to know that we will go as fast as we can, but as slow as the child needs. Orton-Gillingham's goal is to build reading and spelling skills to mastery.
*With permission from the school, I can travel to your child's school to deliver tutoring*
How can we start receiving help? Schedule an initial session using the calendar link: Scheduling Calendar. During this first session, I want to connect with your child and start to build a rapport where they feel safe to learn with me. I will start an initial assessment during our first session. This assessment will give me information on where your child is struggling and where to start.
