Kathy Willette, M. Ed; Associate/ Orton- Gillingham
I am a teacher that got my start here in Lockhart after receiving my Masters in Elementary Education at Texas State University. For the majority of my teaching career I've taught kindergarten, where I was focused on teaching the foundational skills for reading and writing. I've taught in various settings, rural and inner city public schools, as well as in a private school setting. My last year of teaching in San Antonio pushed me to further my passion for helping children learn to read when I witnessed my own child struggling. It was a challenge for him to recognize letters, attach sounds to letters, and blend those sounds to read the words he saw on the page. As a mother of 3 and a veteran kindergarten teacher, I knew it was best to not wait, but seek help.
Why I opened The Reading House...
After my son was diagnosed with dyslexia, he began to receive services at school (30 minutes per day in a group of 6) and although I was thankful for what the school was doing, I knew it was not enough. To provide him better support, I sought training in multiple dyslexia programs (Reading by Design and Reading Readiness) and completed extensive training in the Orton- Gillingham approach. The more I learned, the more I realized that I wanted to help other children by providing dyslexia services here in my hometown. I know from firsthand experience how it feels to see your child struggle to read when those around him seem to acquire the skill so effortlessly. Whether your child has dyslexia, or is needing more support when it comes to reading, writing, or spelling, I can help.
