A social anthropologist and a convicted criminal who got deported from Germany engage in a dialogue to tell the story of many Turkish migrants from Germany who have to deal with the precariousness of existence without a fixed abode, family support and economic prospect.
“Arkadaşloch – Nobody’s Problem” is an essay documentary film which tells the story of Özgür Kal who was deported from Germany to Turkey, and depicts his self-transformation from being the poster-child of failed integration to becoming a family-oriented business owner in Antalya. Based on Nilay Kılınç’s PhD research, the documentary offers a closer look at the lives of second-generation Turkish-German migrants who have to deal with the precariousness of existence without a fixed abode and economic prospect, even after ‘returning’ to Turkey – their so-called “homeland”.
ÖZGÜR KAL
This is the story of Özgür Kal, the son of a Turkish guest-worker who was raised in Germany. He was deported from Germany due to criminal acts and, since then, he lives in the Mediterranean tourism hub of Turkey, Antalya, managing a hairdresser shop.
The documentary is a close look up to the problems that the second generation faces whilst growing up in Germany in relation to their family lives and the life outside of home. Secondly, the story reflects the ‘return’ story to Turkey, where Antalya is the place for the main character where he turned over a new leaf. Deportation was the first turning-point in Özgür’s life: he found himself in a ‘new’ country that he barely remembers, with no friends and relatives who could support him.
The second turning point happened when he settled in Antalya, where he managed to achieve a more fulfilling and better life. Like other Turkish returnees from Germany, Özgür was able to utilise his language skills of German, Turkish and English to make a decent living through tourism-related jobs and he finally started up his own shop. Moreover, he promised himself to ‘stay free’ from all his bad habits such as drugs and alcohol, and everyone who negatively influence the good, honest and hardworking person he strives to be. His motto was clear as his name, Özgür Kal - which means “stay free”.
