The original name of the Planet was Chiron, a world sufficiently like Earth to be habitable but very, very different in its native life and atmosphere. There is a triple sun, two moons and only one other planet shares the solar system. Gravity is slightly higher, days shorter and years longer.
The main difference to colonies is that the atmosphere is dense and mostly nitrogen, making it only barely breathable in places. It is a paradise for Earth plantlife though, once space is cleared for them. Bases have to be enclosed in domes or buried underground while vehicles are enclosed or breathing masks worn. Planet is not exactly hostile, but it is barely welcoming.
Planet was not exactly unoccupied when colonists arrived, with a wide range of plant and animal life thriving throughout the ecosystem. The most notable is the massive fungal blooms which sometimes form towers, rising up and reshaping the land when they do. These dense mats, hundreds of miles across, can be metres deep and cover a large amount of Planet's surface. It is a nightmare to traverse, with sharp ridges and unexpected crevasses.
The oddest thing about it, however, is the faint hum, or moaning sound which people hear when travelling over it. This 'song' is different for everyone who hears it and recordings show no sounds. It does, however, often precede attacks by mind worms.
These unspeakable monstrosities are very small individually, no longer than six inches. Their teeth, while sharp, are very small and pose no great threat to the prepared colonist. The problem is that while they are normally found alone, they have a response to when their habitat, the fungus, is disturbed. Arising as a group, a mass of mind worms can include hundreds or thousands in a single demonic boil which can overwhelm almost any transport.
Their horrifying preference for neural matter aside, the mind worms can be opposed easily using flame guns or similar weaponry. When they are on the attack, they possess a strange psychic power to immobilise and incapacitate with terrible visions their opponents, rendering even advanced lasers and armour useless.
Mysterious monoliths, ancient remnants of an alien race, litter the landscape of Planet. Humans are not the first civilisation to have settled, established technology of unknown sophistication and then... left? There is no trace of them or what happened to them. The only certain thing is that the powers they left behind are there for the taking.
