I may be stating obvious here, but making music - both covers and original pieces - takes time. The length of time depends on what kind of song you are working on. I have my own process for writing and arranging music that helps me piece together what I want out of my song, and after a lot of listening and fixing up, I usually get what I'm going for.
All music comes from somewhere. May it be an emotion, an incident that happened to someone, or even other music, most music is made from a place of inspiration. Most of my inspiration comes from stories that I've seen or made up that I try translating into music. Normally this starts after I've seen a movie, read a book, or played a video game. I'll sometimes listen to a movie or video game's soundtrack and recreate the style I like.
This is the stage where the idea first starts to find itself in music. For me this starts at my piano or keyboard, where I start forming a melody that fits the story I'm trying to tell. I'll try many different combinations and when I finally find one I like, I play it and adjust it until I memorize it. This is where I'll either add another 'verse' or add variated 'choruses'.
After writing a song on my piano, I'll sometimes decide I want to record it. I'll decide what style I want- Orchestral, Piano, EDM, etc., etc., -then I'll go down to my room with my computer, hook it up to my keyboard, and start recording. I use Logic Pro X as my digital audio workspace, so I have access to many different instrument sounds to play with. If I'm making an orchestral song, I'll layer different recordings of me playing different parts or variations of the song with string effect and mix them to make the finished file.
That's when I sit back and listen to my creation. I'll mix it, delete parts, and add parts as I see fit. Then, I download it and have it to listen to and send to friends. Sometimes I'll transcribe the song into sheet music so I can always remember how to play that song should I ever forget.
I hope that this page inspired you. Maybe not to the point of going and writing and recording your own music but just as a reflection on music as a way of telling a story. Music is pretty much painting a picture you hear. While my paintings may not be the clearest, I'm working all the time to turn them into something fun take in and reflect on.
