We hypothesize that intuitive, affective responses will dictate the trajectory of moral choices within our participants. We also hypothesize that empathy and compassion levels will play a key role in moral decision-making, which will provide further evidence to support the ethics of care theory. Lastly, we predict that demographic variables like age, gender, and ethnicity may be associated with a participant’s ethical preferences within our autonomous vehicle moral dilemmas.

Participants were 101 undergraduates in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Miami (M age = 20.21, SD = 4.91). Participants were 42 females and 59 males.

Data was collected during the Fall 2021 academic year. Participants were predominantly Caucasian (76.2%) and STEM majors (59.4%).

Moral Machine Questionnaire is a 20-item survey with 20 autonomous vehicle moral dilemmas taken from the Moral Machine Experiment (Awad et al., 2018). The scenarios ask participants to choose which group of people they would choose to save in a hypothetical moral dilemma involving an out-of-control self-driving car. The scenarios involve 7 dimensions (e.g. species, gender, age, pregnancy status, social status, law breaking status, and health) and varied in complexity as participants progressed through the questionnaire.

Santa Clara Brief Compassion Scale (SCBCS; Hwang et al., 2008) is a 5-item measure that is operationalized to study compassion and its pro-social behavior. Items on this scale were generated from Sprecher and Fehr’s Compassionate Love Scale (Sprecher & Fehr, 2005). The SBCS has been shown to have high internal reliability, test/re-test reliability, and convergent/divergent validity. The SBCS scale demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency (α = .892).
