Looking for a free domain to test your projects or build a personal website without breaking the bank? ClouDNS offers free subdomains that you can easily connect to CloudFlare's powerful DNS infrastructure. This guide walks you through the entire process, from registration to successful DNS configuration.
Many developers and hobbyists need domains for testing, learning, or personal projects. While most domain registrars charge annual fees, ClouDNS provides free subdomains with .biz and .org extensions under their cloudns domain. These permanent free domains give you a legitimate web presence without any cost.
The real advantage comes when you combine ClouDNS domains with CloudFlare's DNS services. You get faster DNS resolution, better security features, and a more professional setup than using standard DNS servers. Plus, 👉 ClouDNS offers reliable free DNS hosting with excellent uptime and straightforward management tools, making it perfect for beginners and experienced users alike.
First, head to the ClouDNS website and create an account. After logging in, you'll be guided through an initial setup wizard. Just keep clicking "Next" until you reach the zone selection screen.
When you see the zone options, select Free Zone at the bottom of the list. This unlocks access to free subdomain registration.
On the next screen, you'll see two options for your free domain:
Domains ending in .cloudns.biz
Domains ending in .cloudns.org
Choose your preferred extension and enter your desired subdomain name in the text field. Keep it short, memorable, and relevant to your project. Click "Create" to register your free ClouDNS domain.
Now that you have your ClouDNS domain, it's time to connect it to CloudFlare for better DNS management and performance.
Log into your CloudFlare account and click "Add a Site" from the dashboard. Enter the complete domain you just created on ClouDNS (for example: yourname.cloudns.biz).
CloudFlare will scan for existing DNS records, then prompt you to select a plan. Choose the Free plan at the bottom and click "Continue."
CloudFlare will display two nameserver addresses that look something like:
frank.ns.cloudflare.com
miki.ns.cloudflare.com
Keep this window open—you'll need these nameservers in the next step.
Return to your ClouDNS dashboard and locate your newly created domain in the DNS management section. Click on the domain name to access its settings.
You'll see some default DNS records already configured. Delete all of them—we need a clean slate to point everything to CloudFlare.
Now add two new NS (nameserver) records:
First NS Record:
Type: NS
Host: @ (or leave blank)
Points to: frank.ns.cloudflare.com
Second NS Record:
Type: NS
Host: @ (or leave blank)
Points to: miki.ns.cloudflare.com
Make sure to use the exact nameserver addresses CloudFlare provided in your account, as they may differ from the examples above.
After adding both records, click the "Update" button at the top of the page to save your changes.
Head back to CloudFlare and click "Done, check nameservers" or the equivalent button to verify the configuration.
DNS propagation typically takes 10-15 minutes, though it can occasionally take up to 24 hours. CloudFlare will send you an email confirmation once the nameservers are successfully detected and your domain is active.
During this waiting period, 👉 ClouDNS's fast DNS propagation ensures your domain becomes accessible quickly across global networks, minimizing downtime for your projects.
Once CloudFlare confirms your domain is active, you can:
Add A records to point your domain to web servers
Set up CNAME records for subdomains
Configure email forwarding
Enable CloudFlare's security features like SSL/TLS encryption
Use CloudFlare's CDN to speed up your website
The combination of ClouDNS's free domain service and CloudFlare's robust infrastructure gives you a professional-grade setup without spending a dime. Perfect for testing, learning, or running lightweight personal projects.
