Mount Carmel Basketball student sections experience deserted period
Mount Carmel student sections are known for their energy and pride, but when it comes to basketball games, the only students cheering are the players. As the football season comes to an end, Caravan basketball takes over the sports scene with new players and new opportunities to win big. This season, though. is experiencing a drought–not of water but of fan support.
Games against St. Rita looked empty as a staggering five MC students showed up to cheer on their beloved team . . . or is it beloved anymore?. Fret not, though, as students have provided easy and fair solutions. A majority believe that their school should offer students extra credit or free no-homework passes, but teachers argue school spirit shouldn’t be incentivized but expected. Teachers are now working towards plans to instead push supporting one’s peers another way. They have devised what is seen as extra homework from the students, so students must now attend MC basketball games, or else their tests become three times harder.
“I’ve had enough of these shenanigans,” MC junior Brendan Reilly stated. ”As future class president I vow to never be as cruel as these teachers. If I am elected, bills will be passed and these old laws will vanish.”
Mount Carmel has had a rich history of sports and passionate fans. Student sections used to topple over with the large crowds not too long ago, but what was once overflowing is now non-existing.
English teacher Mr. Dan Haggerty believes that “passion” sometimes needs to be forced. Students don't believe him anymore after they were forced to hear “Where Rainbows Never Die” for the one thousandth time because he believes it is so poetic.
Later on after teachers faced backlash, they created “fake stats” using AI to convince the students. One stat read, “Players are 50% more hydrated when there is a student section present.” This didn’t go well among the student body. “They’re going insane,” said sophomore Danny Lewelling.
With severe drought warnings still not grabbing the attention of students, teachers believe that forced passion is not worth the hassle. To this day the MC basketball student section does not see much action.
