With many still riding high after the recent Mount Carmel football state championship win, some have decided to plan their days off in celebration of such an event. One of those includes jolly ol’ Saint Nick.
The tradition of getting a day off for a school sports championship has been around for decades at MC. For some, it’s the only reason they play sports. Recently, however, it seems like Carmel guys aren’t the only ones honoring this ritual.
Santa Claus is a die-hard Caravan football fan and has been since the inception of the school in 1900. He has made it to every home and away game with spectacular speed using his signature Christmas cheer powered sleigh and sitting in the stands under the guise of a typical huskier dad. Recently, he has started to adopt the idea of taking a day off for a state championship. He claims it has tripled his elves’ satisfaction with their jobs up north.
“It makes sense that he would give himself a break,” says MC Principal Mr. Scott Tabernacki. “I couldn’t imagine having to go to every house on Christmas Eve.”
After hearing about Santa’s sabbatical, Assistant Principal Mr. Bill Nolan decided to take it upon himself to help save Christmas. Doing his best with the resources he had, he got a list ready, and, using the power of Studium periods and assemblies, he was able to get enough help from his “elves” to make all the presents in time.
“I was crushed hearing about Santa this year,” said freshman Micheal O’Donnel, “but when I heard Mr. Nolan was taking his place, I didn’t mind missing Christmas for one year.”
Even the upperclassmen were feeling the exhaust of participating in the saving of Christmas
“Making all the gifts was exhausting,” said senior Anthony Aguilar, “there’s a reason why Santa has magical little people do it and not teenagers.”
With the overall success of Christmas this year, Nolan plans on trying it again much to the chagrin of the rest of the student body
