With Coach Antonio Godinez leaving Mount Carmel to save St. Rita High School, it might finally be time for their coddled students to get some conditioning in the classroom.
Coach Godinez's unparalleled personality and good deeds built him quite the legacy during his time at MC. He’s made multiple amazing state runs for soccer, taught countless character-building lessons during Spanish classes, and helped many young men get to the collegiate level academically and athletically. Thus, when St. Rita was in need of someone with such skills in and out of the classroom, they looked no further than 64th and Dante. Since Godinez carried all of the characteristics of a stand-out teacher in addition to time-tested coaching skills, he was just the right man for the job.
“The future of the soccer program now lies in the hands of the underclassmen, and Coach Godinez knew how to bring out the best in us," says senior leader Julian Velazquez. "But ultimately, it has to come naturally for the new guys. At least he was around for my era, but now the future is uncertain.”
It has been rumored that Godinez plans on bringing Rita students up to snuff with intense physical conditioning. A key part of the soccer program at MC, rumors at Rita have people saying that he is starting the whole school on full-field gassers year-round. All of this conditioning is going to come in handy since Godinez is petitioning to limit the Rita passing periods to just one minute, leaving those who do not comply subject to even more gassers after school. As a result of all this training, students will be rewarded with the ability to be able to get to class even faster than before. This petition also proposes that detention will be switched to during school lunch, leaving students to actually want to make it to their class on time.
This is not the first time intense MC teachers have also imposed their will at St. Rita. Many have heard of great teachers such as Mr. Tim Baffoe and Mr. KC Perlberg coming from Rita. Yet, others such as Mr. Kieran Kellam and Mr. David McGovern have left MC to take a position at the rival school.
Another major aspect of Coach Godinez’s presence that will for sure be missed around the school is his superstar cooking abilities. Even outside of the school setting, he could be found at football games or his own Sunday barbecues. He has always found a way to bring out the grill.
“Whatever the event was, he was there, " says junior Mateo Atilano. “I think I even saw cooking for mass once. Now the only cooking we get is through Mr. John O’Connor’s Tailgate Sports Club.”
