Mount Carmel nearly goes co-ed because of incredible female football player

Just recently there was a major decision involving Mount Carmel, the long-time all-boys high school, going co-ed. The discussion of the school possibly going co-ed shocked not just the alumni of Mount Carmel but also the whole of Chicago.

Everyone has heard of the famous Mount Carmel Brotherhood and how it has impacted many young men's lives. So why would they change one of the big things that makes Mount Carmel special?

Well, if there is one thing that Mount Carmel is known for as much as the brotherhood, it is the football team. This leads to the answer of why Mount Carmel came so close to becoming co-ed.

The reason has been found out to be an extremely talented female quarterback. Her name is Tamara Brady. Brady had been scouted during the previous grade school football season while QBing at Simeon, and the Mount Carmel football coaches were extremely interested in recruiting her. Brady never threw an incomplete pass and won every single game she played in dominant fashion.

At MC Head Coach Jordan Lynch’s annual grade school combine, he witnessed first-hand the incredible accuracy with which Brady throws the ball. When throwing at fourteen different targets each progressively getting smaller, she hit every single one. Brady was able to throw the football over 100 yards. She also ran a 40-yard dash of 4.39 seconds, her vertical jump was 48 inches, her broad jump was over 13 feet, and her 20-yard shuttle was done in a record time of 4.27 seconds.

Brady has never been sacked before and has never had a single injury. Coach Lynch approached her and told her that she would be guaranteed a starting spot on varsity by her sophomore year.

At the time, Brady did express confusion at the fact that an all-boys school was offering her a football scholarship, but she was assured that this would not be an issue. Coach Lynch first broached the idea with principal Mr. Scott Tabernaki, who then relayed the prospect of a massive and historic school culture change to school president Mr. Brendan Conroy and the Board of Directors. After serious deliberations at the top and consultation with the Carmelite order of priests, the decision was made to explore making Mount Carmel co-ed to allow young women in the Chicagoland area the chance to experience the same positive life-shaping education as thousands of young men have prior and to win football championships.

Yet the decision ended up not happening for two reasons. First, the pushback from the Mount Carmel community was intense, though this was easily avoidable had the true reason been told to everyone. Many of the stakeholders would have completely understood if they had told us that the reason was to get a QB who runs like a gazelle and throws dimes. The Mount Carmel community would have come together to not only accept the decision but endorse it if it led to the prospect of at least one more state championship.

The second reason that the star female recruit ended up not with Mount Carmel was that she was indecisive about going to Mount Carmel or Mother McAuley. She ended up deciding to go with Mother McAuley, It is not known why because McAuley could not have possibly offered something that Mount Carmel did not.

This is not the end. Sources within the MC athletic department say that currently, the Caravan coaching staff is scouting Brady’s younger sister.
