"Pottery in the paddock" with Isla Norton

Location: The Paddock, Belmont NSW

Join Isla Norton, a 2024 graduate of the National Art School and a rising ceramic artist from Lake Macquarie, for a gentle, hands-on introduction to pottery.

Over four Saturday mornings, Isla will guide participants through the foundations of hand-building techniques, helping you create up to four unique ceramic pieces. This course is perfect for beginners or potters with some experience looking to reconnect with creative play in a welcoming, communal setting.

What You’ll Learn:

• Basic hand-building techniques (pinch, coil, slab)

• How to form and refine your own functional or sculptural pieces

• Surface preparation for bisque firing

• An introduction to studio process and creative confidence
  
  

What You’ll Make:

Each participant will create up to four greenware pieces, which will be:

• Bisque-fired, glazed, and glaze-fired by Isla. Students will be presented options for glazing finishes by Isla before the end of the course.

• Available for pickup two weeks after the final session
  
  

What To Bring

• Two large/cake sized plastic containers with sealable lids for saving your work.

• An apron that can be wiped down or laundered between sessions.

• An old rag - a tea towel size is perfect.

Cost: $50 per session

Includes all materials, tools, glaze, firings, and tuition. Morning tea provided.
Limited places available.

No previous experience required, just curiosity and clothes you don’t mind getting muddy. This is a relaxed and friendly entry point into clay and creative rhythm.

Please note:
While every care is taken during firing, ceramic outcomes can be unpredictable. Cracks, glaze shifts, and misfires are part of the process and accepted as creative risk. All participants will be given clear care and safety instructions during class.
