Ways to Support Technology Use at Home

By Jamie Rifkowitz, Technology Facilitator

Technology plays a key role in our everyday lives. Now, more than ever, it’s important that we leverage technology skills for good-- both at school and at home. Fostering good digital citizenship habits will allow our children to make smart, quality decisions when interacting with digital content.

Here are some tips to support technology use at home:

Encourage positive digital citizenship

  • Treat others with respect online as you would face-to-face.

  • Be responsible when sharing personal information.

Inspire a growth mindset

  • Many educational tools allow users to set their own pace, monitor their own progress, and choose their own activities.

  • These tools also provide feedback and effort acknowledgement.

  • Remembering that it takes time to grow and learn allows us to face challenges that arise. Technology is not always perfect and learning to persevere through these challenges is a key concept.

Learn about the technologies being used in your child’s classroom; start by asking them about them.

  • Google Classroom/Seesaw platforms.

  • G Suite (Google Docs, Slides, Drive...)

  • Curriculum-based programs.

Practice good chromebook/device habits

  • Try to shut down each day.

  • Charge the device before it reaches low power mode.

  • Close down extra tabs to enhance processing.

  • Watch and discuss this short video with your children to develop good device habits.
