You don’t need a title, a budget, or permission. Just a sense that the past still matters—and that democracy is worth the work.

• Explore local cemeteries, archives, and historical societies to uncover the names and lives of Black veterans in your own neighborhood.
• Share what you learn—with your kids, your neighbors, your students, your faith group.
• Visit a gravesite. Many Black Civil War veterans are buried in modest or unmarked plots. A moment of silence matters.

• Celebrate Juneteenth not just as a holiday, but as a civic responsibility.
• Speak up for liberty, equality, and the rule of law—the same ideals that led Black soldiers to fight for a country that had not yet recognized their full humanity.
• Help build a public culture rooted in gratitude—and in action.
