Itraconazole is a fungicide (antifungal) drug. In some countries it is prescription only so you may need the help of a doctor to order it unless you can find a way to obtain it online.
There are some case reports of full recovery from ASD using Itraconazole but bear in mind that such dramatic changes are going to be very rare. For example: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33132781/
Having spoken with several other Autism parents it is not at all unusual to see really, really good things with it (sudden speech, increased focus).
I'd certainly consider giving it a try.
However, like anything else, there can be a downside.
I know of one parent whose son became extremely aggressive and the aggression lasted for an extended time.Â
Also, a friend of a friend of mine's son actually became pyschotic while using it. There are isolated case reports of this. For example this case report which mentions two others: http://www.remedypublications.com/open-access/itraconazole-induced-psychosis-a-case-report-5902.pdf
The symptoms resolved with the use of antipsychotics but it's hard to tell if they would have done so without them.
Scary right? Well, yes of course but there's more to this than meets the eye.
My friend whose son became aggressive. Her son had terrible mould toxicity as shown by mycotox testing. They moved from their house and that went way down. However it then climbed way back up, despite no new mould exposure, as he was on Itraconazole.
It seems likely that it's not the Itraconazole as such that's causing the problem but a release of toxins from the fungal die off. In fact it could easily be a release of bacterial toxins as well, if the fungus is part of a biofilm (a very normal setup) which is breaking down as the Itraconazole destroys the fungus.
So, there are therefore a couple of things to do which may avoid problems:
Give binders such as Bentonite clay and activated charcoal to absorb toxins that may be released.
Monitor closely for mood changes and discontinue the Itraconazole. (Possibly resuming at a lower dose).
The other point I'd make is that as evidennced by my friend's son's mycotox results, Itraconazole can be a hugely important tool in clearing a fungal infection. If there is such an infection, it must be cleared or there seems little chance of recovery.
The very unlikely side effects may well be mitigated as mentioned above and it seems to me to be something well worth trying since, if a child has a severe fungal infection. I don't know what else is likely to help.
Dosing
I am not a doctor! The adult dose is 200mg and so you that will need to be scaled to a child.
