One of the more famous instances of public entertainment was the display of plays and gladiator battles in Ancient Rome. These public exhibitions brought people together as they gathered to witness acts of heroism and tyranny. In Rome, there were two main forms of public entertainment, provided by the government. Ludi was characterized by games, dances, and chariot races, while Munera composed of combat, animal shows, and unusual exhibitions (Bernett). Gladiator fights were one of the first forms of entertainment that required a concrete set in order to take place. The set of the coliseum became a meeting place for people all around the country to watch exhilarating shows while also discussing topics among themselves.
Public display was then converged into what we see today as concerts. the amphitheater design taken from ancient Greek or Roman performances was then adapted for the type of technological features that enhance a performance. Patrons could now attend a concert for their favorite artist that will serve to keep the artist producing while also allow the audience to form a deeper connection with their idol. Media as we know it was completely changed by the concert as it allowed a interactive experience for the audience rather than simply listening to music. The energy of a live performance gained a massive audience as more artists and entertainers began adapting their own shows to the trend. Looking at our modern era, the average concert gross increased from 2019's $688,535 to the 2022's number of $856,206 (Allen). This increase in concert sales shows that the love for live shows has not dismissed even through the difficulties of travel or disease.
