Rehabilitated  

"Don't go near that one, foreigner," the yard master warned, spitting into the dirt. "He belonged to a young Lordling in the cavalry. The boy tried to show off at a royal review, and the beast went mad. Threw the boy, trampled a grandstand, and bit off a groom's finger. He's unsellable."

"How much?" Shariif asked, his eyes never leaving the thrashing animal.

"He’s worth nothing but his hide and his bones. Three silver pieces."

Shariif dropped five silver coins into the man's palm. "Leave the gate open. And take your men out of the yard."

Once the yard was empty, the silence fell like a heavy blanket. The ash-grey stallion stood chest-deep in the shadows of the stone pen, its breath rattling hoarsely through its nostrils, waiting for the next blow.

Shariif didn't approach with a rope or a whip. He walked into the center of the muddy pen, sat down on an overturned wooden crate, and simply folded his hands. He brought his breathing down, anchoring his weight into the earth, projecting a profound, immovable stillness into the space.

For two hours, neither of them moved. The stallion stood tense, muscles twitching under its scarred hide, listening to the rhythmic, calm breath of the man in the dirt. Slowly, the blind panic began to drain from the horse, replaced by a profound exhaustion. Its ears pricked forward under the burlap hood.

Shariif stood up, his movements fluid and agonizingly slow. He walked to the horse's shoulder, avoiding its head, and placed his bare hand against its sweat-slicked neck. The stallion shuddered but didn't strike.

"They tied you up so tight you forgot how to breathe," Shariif murmured softly in his native dialect. The nobility made him a monument to their control," Shariif said, his voice quiet. "They wanted him to be a lesson in obedience. We will call him Restrained Example, so they never forget what happens when their examples break free."
