The site is approximately 5 minutes’ walk from the North Entrance to UWE’s Frenchay Campus. The route, along Filton Lane, is segregated from traffic on Filton Road and is an established shared pedestrian and cycle route. There is a signalised crossing over Filton Road at this point.
The site is well served by public transport, with three bus stops (including Metrobus) within 200m of the site; Filton Abbey Wood and Parkway railway stations are also nearby. Its sustainable location, close to the university campus, will reduce student commute times and the associated pressures on the transport network.
No parking will be provided for students, however there will be some limited parking provided for staff and disabled users together with secure cycle parking for over 145 bicycles, and a further 15 Sheffield-stand spaces to the west of the building. This is in-line with the parking strategy for most urban purpose-built student accommodation buildings. At the start/end of the university year, temporary parking will be available in the adjacent car park for Filton Retail Park and the process will be managed by UWE staff.
Site analysis diagram
The site is an underutilised area of previously developed land. Whilst it is not without its challenges, the design will look to maximise opportunities for the delivery of a highly sustainable and high-quality development.
