327 bedspaces provided over a total of 9 floors, rising from 5 to the east to 9 to the west in a spiralling design
Accessible location approximately a 5-minute walk from the North Entrance to UWE’s Frenchay Campus
A range of student communal and study spaces, with a central courtyard acting as the social heart of the scheme
Limited parking provided for staff and disabled users
Secure cycle parking for over 145 bicycles, and a further 15 Sheffield-stand spaces to the public realm west of the building
Landscaping within the courtyard will provide outdoor recreational space.
Planting and soft landscaping will create habitats for local wildlife to help to achieve Biodiversity Net Gain
Floor Plans
Ground Floor
Reception and student social spaces will be located at the southwest corner of the building. A glazed frontage at ground floor will show activities going on inside, addressing the footpath between UWE and the retail facilities. The main reception will be accessed from the west, while the majority of students will access the building from the south, via the pedestrian route from the Frenchay campus. Communal spaces, including study spaces, social rooms for catching up and socialising with friends, will spill out into the internal courtyard.
Upper Floors
The upper floor contain a range of different size ‘cluster’ apartments ranging from four to eight bedrooms. All rooms are ensuite, with shared open plan kitchen, living room and dining spaces.
Materials
The building will be clad in two tones of ‘buff’ brickwork, with brass/gold coloured aluminium cladding, to visually breakup the mass into a collection of smaller adjoined buildings. A glazed frontage at ground floor provides internal visibility of the communal areas.
The landscaping will be finished with three different types of complementary paving, as well as a shrub planting and wildflower meadow grass planting.
Landscape strategy
The landscape strategy features contrasting angles to the building’s architecture, which will help direct pedestrians around the site as well as generating an exciting and dynamic landscape.
The main drivers for the design are:
Improved permeability and better defined links between Filton Road and adjacent retail facilities will improve the site character
Public realm frontage proposed with a shared surface approach and public seating
Controlled vehicle circulation linking a one-way route from Fox Den Road to the retail parking area
Accessible parking bays and a drop-off/ collection point at the northwest corner of the building
Secure cycle parking for over 145 bicycles, and a further 15 Sheffield-stand spaces to the public realm west of the building
Secure inner courtyard to create outdoor recreational spaces with soft landscape elements to help break the hard surfacing finishes and balance the scale of the new building
Secure first floor green roof located above communal areas
Soft landscaping developed with ecologist advice to achieve Biodiversity Net Gain, creating habitats and food sources for the local wildlife
Site furniture will be robust and appropriate for student environment
Refuse collection will be managed through the service yard located at the rear of the building
Sustainability
The proposed development is targeting BREEAM ‘Excellent’ as a minimum and aspires to be net zero carbon in operation.
Key features include:
A high standard of fabric performance to minimise heat energy demand
All-electric energy systems utilising heat pump technology instead of fossil-fuel based systems
Photovoltaics (PV) with an aspiration to maximise on-site renewable energy generation
Life cycle embodied carbon analysis will be carried out to help make informed decisions on appropriate materials and systems where viable
Occupied rooms will be ventilated by means of local mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), supplemented by natural ventilation where possible
High efficiency LED lighting
Electric vehicle and E-bike charging will be provided
