THE CS, HOME SINCE 1966 OF THE ANNUAL COMMONSENSE CITY FOLK MUSIC FESTIVAL, HAS AN ENDURING TRADITION OF MUSICALITY AND STORYTELLING THROUGH TRADITIONAL SONG
Fun fact: Our Commonsense City Marshal Bob Dhillon was named after an American singer-songwriter (not Biff Rose, Hamilton Camp, Eric Andersen, or Tom Paxton) who appeared at the Folk Music Festival at its inception... where his parents first met!
With the community having such deep musical roots, perhaps it is not surprising that the popular comedian Laughing Boi adopted an undeservedly obscure tune by 1970s singer-songwriter Mendy Ledbone as their theme song. Fans are always thrilled to hear "Cheery Chum" at the beginning and conclusion of Laughing Boi's sets and enthusiastically sing along to the uplifting lyrics (seemingly unaware of Mendy's sarcastic intent.)
Mendy (born Mendel Aubrey Ledbortz in 1950) was a beloved institution in Commonsense City, where he performed and hosted annually at the annual folk music festival and the Lady Jones Lounge of the fashionable Hotel Jonesy, where he was a weekend attraction for nearly fifty years. (Sadly, he passed away in early 2021 from complications of the Covid virus, although several in town still argue that there were other circumstances involved in his death that the marshal declined to investigate for his own reasons. Years later, Mendy's widow still refuses to let sleeping dogs lie.)
Here is Mendy's original recording, which briefly received widespread radio play in Canada and some northeastern states through Commonsense City's iconic rock music station, CICC-FM. As a footnote, thirty-six years after his first exposure to not-quite-fame, Mendy went back into the studio to record an extended and updated remix version. Listen, and sing along, if you wish.
