There are multiple fables and stories that give a background to the creation of the Chinese Zodiac. The most popular, is the story of "The Great Race." Legend has it that one day the gods ordered that animals be designated as signs of each year and the twelve that arrived first were selected.
In honor of these animals, the years have been divided in order, among the animals who finished. The Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig all have years based in their honor. This year is the year of the pig.
There are many versions of the story of "The Great Race", but in each one an animal represents some sort of strength, and some sort of weakness. Yet, each one finished the race to get a spot in the Chinese Zodiac.
First year in the cycle. The rat represents the first and most-liked signs of the Chinese zodiac. The loved characteristics of the rat are it's wit, spirit,alertness, delicacy, flexibility and vitality.
Second year in the cycle. The ox is the second ranked zodiac sign. They are most known to be conservative and stick to their beliefs. Ox are hard workers and symbolize diligence, persistence and honesty.
Third Year in the cycle. Tigers are known to be brave, cruel, forceful, stately and terrifying and are the symbol of power and lordliness. In Ancient times, only people born under the tiger were saw fit to be rulers.
Fourth year in the cycle. They represent hope, and have elegant mannerisms rather than aggressive ones. Tender and lovely.
Fifth year in the cycle. The Dragon holds a high reputation in Chinese culture and the zodiac year. It shows power, authority, honor, etc.
Sixth year in the cycle. Differing between evil and divine light, the snake usually holds a more dangerous and mysterious nature.
Seventh year in the cycle. Represents a more passionate and self improvement motivation. The Horse symbolizes energy and shows a symbol of independence.
Eighth year in the cycle. Within all the signs, the sheep is extremely likable and personable. People usually relate it to beautiful things, as well as representing a useful resource from the fleece.
Ninth year in the cycle. The Monkey is a symbol of intelligence, for it is a very smart animal. Also related to success because of a pronunciation that sounds much like a historical Chinese leader during the Spring and Autumn seasons.
Tenth year in the cycle. The rooster represents a very important and valued trait of punctuality and function. The practical action of roosters being a natural alarm clock is very significant.
Eleventh Year in the Cycle. The dog is very insightful to its relationship with man, and is seen in a very positive light of helping and understanding the spirit of it's human. Dogs represent a loyalty, and one coming to your house is seen as good fortune.
Twelfth year in the cycle, the final year. (Our current Zodiac of 2019!). The pig is not particularly positive in Chinese culture, as seen to represent a laziness as liking to sleep and eat. At the same time, the pig means no harm and can bring wealth to people.
